Essential oils can be applied directly to your skin using a carrier oil for spreading, or diffused through the air using an essential oil diffuser.

BEST ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER EVALUATION REVIEWS and guide for 2018 pin

Diffusers are little machines that take drops of an essential oil, mix the oil with water, and distribute into the air so you’re able to breathe the oil in and enjoy the oil ambiently.

With so many essential oil diffusers on the market, we decided to gather all the information you might need in order to make a good decision on which diffuser is best for you, and to review some of the top options available.

What is an Essential Oil Diffuser?

Essential oil diffusers are used in aromatherapy to diffuse essential oil into the air. You insert drops of the oil, turn the diffuser on, and are able to smell and inhale it in the air. As you breathe in the scent of the oil, you’ll receive the relaxing benefits that the oil contains.

Instead of going out to a relaxing location, you can turn your home into a place for aromatherapy with an essential oil diffuser. Not all diffusers are created equal though.

What are the Differences Between Humidifiers and Diffusers?

It’s not uncommon for people to confuse diffusers and humidifiers. They can look fairly similar and are both used to treat the air you breath. They’re different though in what they’re designed to do and the tasks they perform.

Humidifiers are used when the air is dry to increase the moisture content in the air. They can be stand alone appliances or integrated into a larger heating system to humidify an entire home.

Humidifiers are popular in drier climates and in moderate climates during the winter when furnaces and heating systems dry out the air.

While a diffuser emits water vapor into the air like a humidifier, diffusers are designed to take and mix essential oils with that water, while humidifiers can be damaged if used with essential oils.

Generally it’s not recommended to use a diffuser and humidifier at the same time, as too much humidity in the air will dampen the effects of the essential oil from the diffuser.

Before you go out and pick up your essential oil diffuser, here are a few considerations to keep in mind:
  • Firstly, remember that your diffuser is only as good as the essential oil it’s used to diffuse. You can check out the best essential oil brands for more on how to select a quality essential oil.
  • Different types of diffusers work slightly differently and have some different parts. If you pick out an ultrasonic unit for instance, you won’t need to worry about filters.
  • Different diffusers may offer unique features like special colored lights on the top and sides. See the full diffuser reviews to learn more about the unique features offered by each diffuser.
  • Cool-mist diffusers produce little to no heat which may degrade the benefits of your 100% pure essential oils. So we recommend purchasing a cool-mist diffuser.

For best results, use purified, filtered, or distilled water in the reservoir made of PC (polycarbonate) plastic that is sturdy and tough with rubber feet on the bottom to prevent slipping and falling. Ordinary tap water has iron, calcium, and other minerals that can clog the system. Tap water will leave a white dust on your furniture—that dust is the minerals. Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oils including citrus oils such as lemon, orange, grapefruit, and lime to the water. Peppermint and eucalyptus can be used as well in this diffuser.

With pure essential oils, the fragrance is pure from nature’s plants. It smells nothing like cheap chemically made room deodorizers and candles. Those are phony and unhealthy scents. Do not use perfumed or flower waters in the diffuser.

The TaoTronics® essential oil diffuser offers fragrance and beauty for your home and office décor, gyms, spas, Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, physical therapy, or massage studios. These are used in chiropractor, dentist, and professional office settings including hotel lobbies, boutiques, hair, feet, and nail salons. This diffuser will also operate with the light off and without oils to be only a humidifier. You can set the mist to disperse for a greater or less intensity.

Water level—must be just below the Maxline. This is important for proper functioning. If you put in too much water, the mist will be insignificant. Water must be in the tank (reservoir) or the unit will not turn on. The unit has an automatic shut off and remember that it will not restart again until you fill the reservoir with water again.

Essential oils—for best performance must be 100% pure therapeutic grade including citrus oils. Add 3-5 drops of oil and you are ready to enjoy your favorite fragrance and moisturize the air as well. Use regular tap water, but not well water. Please read the essential oil labels to be sure there are no filler oils, commercial blended or carrier oils that can stop up your wonderful unit. You can blend your own 100% essential oils together in the unit.

Diffuser materials—are PP (Polypropylene) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and is BPA-free (Bisphenol A (BPA), an organic synthetic compound used in plastics. Everyone today wants to know that the plastic items they use are BPA-free and no wonder—the toxins are not good for anyone’s health. Be assured these diffusers are BPA-free with no toxins to worry about.

Maintenance—is quick and hassle-free. After you use your unit 5 to 6 times, first unplug the unit from the base. Fill the water reservoir with 17 ounces (500 mL) of water and one tablespoon of citric acid (sour salt) or two tablespoons of distilled (white) vinegar. Use a cotton swab to clean after letting the mixture soak 5 to 10 minutes. Pour out the solution being careful not to let it get into the air outlet hole on the side. Never submerge the unit in water. Allow the unit to air dry or use a paper towel to dry it inside and out. Mildew and bacteria will grow in your diffuser if you let water sit inside for days and weeks. Always leave it clean and dry when not in use.

10. TomCare Square Cool-Mist Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser

Our Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

The TomCare diffuser is a striking square design with wood accents and the lights cover the entire unit and we haven’t seen many diffusers in this shape. The UPC number 713924816489 is a best seller on Amazon.com®.

The diffuser is a 5-in-1 unit in that it not only emits a fragrant mist, but the water produces negative ions that boosts moods and is calming. It’s like the feeling you get when it’s raining—you feel soothed and want to take a nap. Plus, it’s a nightlight that delights the kids, and a small humidifier with its vapor of moisture. And, it’s a small air purifier cleaning and disinfecting the air with oils that help with that.

The diffuser holds 700 mL (24 ounces) of water to run 20+ hours in the low-mist mode and about 10 hours using the high-mist mode, then shuts off automatically with no beep sound. Set the unit to run 1-, 3-, or 6-hours or set it to run continuously. Just add 5 to 10 drops of 100% pure essential oils (not included) on top of the water and turn on. It will cover about 800-square feet of space.

With its whisper-quiet fan, you or the kids will sleep all night without being disturbed. The 7 LED lights can be set to one color, cascade through all the colors, or turn them off completely.

The plastic is made of polypropylene (PP) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). It is BPA-free.

From my experience, city tap water is not the water to use because of minerals and lime scale that clog up diffusers and the tube inside to draw up water for the mist. I use filtered or distilled water at about 99¢ a gallon. Minerals in tap water create a white dust on furniture tops as well. It’s best to change the water each day to avoid mold and bacteria growth. The scale buildup is hard to clean and mold makes spores for more mold growth wherever it’s damp or wet.

Put one in your baby’s nursery for congestion using eucalyptus or peppermint essential oils. Citrus can be used with no problem.

The shape harmonizes well with any design scheme in your home. It is also lovely in reception or waiting areas for doctors, chiropractors, bank lobbies, spas, massage and physical therapist studios, nail, or hair salons, and anywhere you want a heavenly fragrance with therapeutic benefits from the oil you choose. Yoga and Pilates studios love these too.

The dimensions are 6.5- x 6.3- x 5.7-inches.

Plug the 6-foot UL® listed cord into a USA, Mexico, or Canada 110/120-Volt, 50/60 Hz (Hertz) outlet. Those in other countries will need to buy a 220/240-Volt adapter. The diffuser does not use batteries. It cannot be used in vehicles. The adapter is packed inside the diffuser.

Gift-wrapping is available for loved ones, family, and friends. You will receive the diffuser, alternating current (A/C) power adapter inside the diffuser base, and User’s Manual. It comes with a 1-year Warranty and is made in China.

Our Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

The NexGadget diffuser is BPA-free with in a tulip shape, model number DIF-1522-BRO in tan or dark brown faux wood grain. WinTech-US is the genuine NexGadget seller and any others would be fakes. Matching any home, office, spa, or medical waiting areas, the diffuser will emit the most heavenly fragrance into the space.

You can set the timer for 1-, 3-, or 6-hours to run continuously or intermittently to run 8- to 12-hours depending on the mist mode selected. It indeed uses 400 mL (13.5-ounces) of water to add essential oils. Without water, you would not get a mist and that would make this a nebulizer diffuser using no water using only pure straight oils in its bottle.

So, add your 8 to 10 drops of 100% pure essential oils (not included) on top of the water, set the functions you want, and enjoy the 7 different colors of LED lights either on or off. The colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—just like the rainbow colors. It is a 5-in-1 unit that is a diffuser, small humidifier with the moisture coming out, a nightlight, emits negative ions from the mist that makes you feel good, and purifies the air. It will cover about 500-square feet of space. The lid does not screw on or off or snap into place—it simply sits on top, but is not a problem.

Simply put the purified or distilled water to the Max line, add the oil, and the whisper-quiet device will sooth and make your space smell wonderful. It does beep when it shuts off. The minerals from hard water create a white dust when misting and the lime scale will clog up the inner workings and mister. Water must be changed each day as well to avoid mold growth.

The dimensions are 8.46-inches tall x 6.63-inches deep and weighs about 2-ounces empty.

Plug the UL® listed 110/120-Volt, 50/60 Hz 5.91-foot cord into a USA outlet. Outside the USA, Canada or Mexico buy a 220/240-Volt adapter. In the USA, it operates at 2.4 mHz. The diffuser does not use batteries.

It will shut off automatically when the water is gone. Did I say water? Yes, it is not “waterless.” Amazon shows the description to be “waterless” and that is not true! It indeed uses 160 mL (5.4-ounces) of water to add essential oils into. Without water, you would not get a mist and that would make this a nebulizer diffuser consuming no water using only pure straight essential oils in its own supplied bottle.

The 7 intriguing LED light colors will entrance your kids and you too. It is mesmerizing and there are no beep sounds with this unit ever.

The Anjou, model number AJ-AD001, is stunning, is not “waterless” using 300 mL (10.14 ounces) of water to cover about 450-square feet. For a heavenly fragrance and therapeutic benefits, add 2-8 drops of 100% pure essential oils (not included). It does produce negative ions with the water the same as rain does. Negative ions lift your mood and so do some essential oil essences.

4. Tenswall Ultrasonic Cool-Mist Essential Oil Aromatherapy Diffuser

Our Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

The faux wood grain Tenswall Ultrasonic Essential Oil Aromatherapy Diffuser is a lovely soft ebony black plastic. The plastic is made of polypropylene (PP) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). It is not BPA-free however.

The color harmonizes well with any design scheme in your home. It is also lovely in reception or waiting areas for doctors, chiropractors, bank lobbies, spas, massage and physical therapist studios, nail, or hair salons, and anywhere you want a heavenly fragrance with therapeutic from the oil you choose. Yoga and Pilates studios love these too.

Some think it looks like a tulip or flower vase, but in person, it looks like a fancy gourd and I love the shape. It is quite large and holds 400 mL (13.5-ounces) of water for adding your 100% pure essential oils (not included). About 8 drops is nice, but if you want a more intense fragrance, add more. The oil floats on the water, since oil and water do not mix, so the intensity is at the beginning and you will probably want to add more drops after a few hours of running.

That’s scale buildup is hard to clean and mold makes spores for more mold growth wherever it’s damp or wet.

Put one in your baby’s nursery for congestion using eucalyptus or peppermint essential oils. Citrus can be used with no problem.

It is an ultrasonic diffuser so it naturally holds water. A “waterless” diffuser is a nebulizer and this is not that type. Therefore, do not be confused by the title description on Amazon.

The LED (light emitting diodes) cascade through the 7 colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Let it cycle through all colors, set it to one favorite color, or turn the lights off completely. The lights can be set to dim or bright for whatever you like best.

Tenswall Ultrasonic Cool-Mist Essential Oil Aromatherapy Diffuser infographic showing led lighting options and timer settings

The timer can be set for 1-, 3-, or 6-hours to run 60-, 120-, 180-minutes or continually on up to 10 hours. It will turn off automatically when it’s low on water. The fan is very quiet at about 35 dB (decibels), the sound of a whisper. A decibel is a logarithmic unit that is used to describe levels of sound.

You should get about 500-square feet of coverage space. The lid does not screw on or off or snap into place—it simply sits on top and is not a problem. The 3 rubberized feet will hold it steady to not slide off furniture.

Plug the 6-foot UL® listed cord into a USA, Mexico, or Canada 110/120-Volt, 50/60 Hz (Hertz) outlet. The output power is 650 mA (milliamps). Those in other countries will need to buy a 220/240-Volt adapter. The diffuser does not use batteries. It cannot be used in vehicles. The adapter is packed inside the diffuser.

Around the circle ring where the base meets the top is where the LED 7 assorted color lights will illuminate. You could put fake flowers such as silk or plastic in the top little holes; however, do not put real flowers in because the stems would produce chemicals you don’t want in the unit, your lungs, or the air. You wouldn’t want real flowers in the unit when its running anyway.

Clean the diffuser following the manufacturer’s instructions. If the instructions are not understood, use about 2 tablespoons of clear distilled vinegar with a half-tank of water and let it run 15 minutes. Pour that off and add plain water to the Max line to rinse letting it run another 15 minutes. Use cotton swabs and let it air dry.

The dimensions are 6-1/5 inches wide x 9-1/2-inches tall and weighs about 1-pound empty.

Gift-wrapping is available for loved ones, family, and friends. You will receive the diffuser, alternating current (A/C) power adapter, water measuring cup inside the diffuser base, and User’s Manual. The diffuser comes with a 45-day money-back guarantee and an 18-month Warranty. It is made in China.

Do You Wonder if You are Buying Fake Essential Oils?

Mother nature has provided us with many amazing healing plants. The oils from these plants can work wonders for you if used properly. As with any other type of product, there is some pretty low quality and fake essential oils in the marketplace. Many are packaged very nicely and can fool you, unless you know what to look for. We hope you get a bottle of liquid in an amber bottle that has been distilled from the flowers, leaves, and roots of an aromatic plant. Some websites offer “extended” essential oils having mixed them with fillers such as seed and nut oils that are cheap. Some use fake synthetic chemical fragrances such as those spray cans for room fragrance and candles all made with chemicals that mimic the scent of the plant. Even aroma therapists can be fooled. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is fake. Good essential oils are expensive, but well worth it.

Final Thoughts

We have evaluated the top 10 rated aromatherapy essential oil diffusers and features to help you with your buying decision. The many therapeutic benefits and pleasant aromas are presented for you to evaluate for your personal needs and enjoyment. With the mystery removed, you will feel confident shopping for an essential oil diffuser. Happy shopping!

Advantages of Using Essential Oil Diffusers

If you are wondering, What are the benefits to me when using diffusers? You will first need to know about the oils that will help you. Do you want to simply relax and feel more serene? Do you want moisturizing benefits for dry skin? Essential oils can be used in many ways. You can pour a few drops into your tub for a soothing and great smelling bath.

On the other hand, use diffusers to fan out the vapors with a cooling mist, permitting the extraction of the plant’s chemical properties that have been used for thousands of years by our distant ancestors. The oils will elevate your mood, help you to relax, heal dry skin, and is spiritually uplifting. Below are the many benefits from using a moisturizing diffuser.

1. Air Purification—The diffusing units are not “machines.” A lawnmower is a machine. Therefore, when you read “machine” at other websites, you might get a visual impression of something large. These units are small, portable, and marvelous for breathing clean, purified air, for removing tobacco smoke and other disagreeable odors. The essential oils have anti-microbial and anti-bacterial components derived from Mother Nature’s wonderful plant kingdom to benefit health happy people.

2. Dust Removal—Diffusers are ionizers. Negative ions attract dust particles, allergens, and other substances. With a diffuser, you will have cleaner air. Diffusers can help those people who suffer from dust allergies, dust mites, asthma, and other allergic ailments. Negative ions are another of nature’s laboratory of wonderful things!

A Side Trip About Negative Ions. Negative ions are in the air and might not be love, but are close to it. Colorless, odorless, and tasteless, they are invisible molecules we inhale abundantly. Think about the outdoors—beaches, waterfalls, mountains, the woods, the forests—these are rich negative ion areas and they are around us when it is raining. In the bloodstream, negative ions produce biochemical happenings that increase our levels of the mood enhancing brain chemical, serotonin that helps to remove stress, depression, and increase energy.

3. Help Uplift Mood and Eliminate Stress—Specific essential oils are known to lift a down mood up. These oils also relieve stress and mild depression. You will feel calmer and relaxed using essential oils with a lovely diffuser. Enjoy and feel secure knowing that the fragrant and purified air has been improved using oils.

4. Improve Immunity—When you purchase an oil diffuser, it means that you will be boosting your immune system by breathing in the plant’s natural and pure beneficial oils.

5. Whole Room Fragrance—Nothing is more appealing then when you laze around feeling enveloped by sweetly scented smells. An ultrasonic diffuser will do this for you, since the unit uses infinitesimal elements from the plant’s properties that wonderfully and elegantly distribute throughout the room. Within a few minutes, you will be experiencing your experience.

6. Humidifier—People exposed to pollen in the air are sometimes sensitive or allergic to their influences. Nasal allergies are miserable. The mucosa in the nose becomes inflamed and mucous is secreted. Humidification can help with that. The diffuser puts out moist air to alleviate the symptoms with its fine spray mist. It can raise the humidity up to 40% more than the current ambient level. You can use the diffuser with water alone to have more humidifying moist air effects.

7. Removes Foul Odors—The diffuser used with your favorite essential oil will remove last night’s fishy odor, smoky smells from tobacco products, and any other offensive or stale smells. Your area will smell fresh in no time.

8. Purity of Essential Oils—Because the essential oils are not heated, they maintain their chemical properties from the source from which they were created—nature’s finest plants. You receive the benefits of this from the ultra-fine mist that permeates your space.

9. No Waste—Most oil diffusers have an automatic shut off feature. This permits no waste of your essential oils in that you used them for their purpose and the unit has now shut down. If you do not want to use the full reservoir, shut the unit off and the oils will be there for the next time you turn it on. The oils do not just evaporate into thin air. They are either consumed or waiting to be consumed.

10. LED Lights—Most all diffusers today have light emitting diodes (LED) that have usually 7 colors of the rainbow.  I like to remember them this way:  Roy G Biv—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet and sometimes white.  They can typically run on one color, cascade through all colors, and be turned off completely.  Checkout nature’s rainbow—the colors are in this order!

Types of Essential Oil Diffusers

There are several types of diffusers available in the marketplace. Here, we have tried to categorize them to their specific functions. The commonly available types of aromatherapy diffusers are: Nebulizer, Ultrasonic, Evaporative, and Heat.

1. Nebulizer Diffusers

Three Nebulizer Essential Oil Diffusers

These diffusers are considered the most powerful. They are cold-oil diffusers that disperse pure essential oils by breaking them into tiny molecules. Later these airborne molecules are misted out to create a fragrant atmosphere. The Nebulizer aroma diffusers are ranked higher due to their therapeutic qualities. Since this type of unit does not require adding water, a heavy concentration of aromatic oil is diffused into the atmosphere.

Pros

These diffusers use 100% pure essential oils making them more health-friendly. They also have a built-in timer that keeps you informed. No light system is provided with the Nebulizer diffusers.

Cons

Nebulizer aroma diffusers are considerably noisy and that can be a turn off for many. It is more expensive and that can be considered a negative to some users. These diffusers scatter larger quantities of oil at one time, consequently they need refills more often, and that can prove costly for many buyers. To control the extra emittance of oil, Nebulizers are now provided with a built-in timer with settings.

2. Ultrasonic Diffusers

Similar to nebulizing diffusers, Ultrasonic diffusers also disperse oils by breaking them into smaller particles. The only difference is the addition of water. These diffusers use a mix of water and essential oils to create a cool mist. They are, however, not as powerful as the Ultrasonic diffusers due to the mild concentration of oil.

Pros

Ultrasonic diffusers double up as humidifiers in wintertime. This is a great advantage for this type of diffuser. They come with a music setting that cuts down on the noise they make. These aromatherapy diffusers are less expensive than Nebulizers are.

Cons

Since water is added with essential oils in the Ultrasonic diffusers, these are not as efficient in their healing power as Nebulizers. Sometimes, these wellness devices come with a light setting that cannot be turned off. You need to keep it clean and avoid using citrus essential oils in these diffusers.

3. Evaporative Diffusers

FanFuser Evaporative Essential Oil Diffuser on table

These basic aromatherapy diffusers scatter essential oils with a fan blowing method with an attached filter. Its evaporating functioning style has given it the name Evaporative Diffusers.

Pros

This type of aromatherapy diffuser works perfectly in diffusing fragrance in a smaller area. Another benefit of buying evaporative aromatherapy diffusers is their relatively low cost. These diffusers are easy to carry and come in pleasing designs.

Cons

Evaporative diffusers do not disperse the complete blend of essential oils at one time. They tend to portion out the oils. Lighter components are evaporated quicker than heavier components. This apportioning of the components (oils/water) cuts down on the overall therapeutic value of the essential oils. Another drawback of these diffusers is that they have shorter running times.

4. Heat Diffusers

Heat Essential Oil Diffuser on white background

This is also a basic oil diffuser, but instead of evaporating essential oils with the help of an air fan, it uses heat for diffusion. Heat diffusers also create a lovely fragrance inside a closed area.

Pros

These are considerably the least expensive of all the aroma oil diffusers readily available to purchase. Most heat diffusers are so small that you can keep them in your vanity kit or purse. They indeed effectively aromatize a specified area.

Cons

Since heated oil diffusers also function by evaporating essential oils, they also portion out the components of essential oils. It affects both the healing benefits for oil and the intensity of the fragrance. Some of these diffusers use high levels of heat to produce an extra strong aroma that can change the chemical bonding of the essential oils. Therefore, a diffuser that uses very low levels of heat is considered better.

All 4 Diffuser Types Reviewed and Compared

To know the most efficient category of aromatherapy diffusers, we compared all of the differences regarding the aspects of aroma diffusion, therapeutic value, longevity, and price.

Dispersal of Aroma

Nebulizing diffusers distribute the essential oil by breaking them into smaller molecules allowing it to diffuse fragrance in a shorter time in a larger area. Ultrasonic diffusers also diffuse oil similarly and they equally aromatize an area effectively while evaporative and heat diffusers work well in scattering the fragrance in a smaller area.

Therapeutic Value

Since the Nebulizing diffuser is a cold aroma-dispersing device, it uses the purest form of essential oils. It ranks higher than all other aromatherapy diffusers with heating. The Ultrasonic diffuser is second best while heat and evaporative diffusers are not considered the best for aroma healing because essential oils work best when used cold.

Longevity

Ultrasonic diffusers are the winner when it comes to running time. These diffusers use a blend of water and a few drops of essential oil. Their higher capacity helps them in diffusing aroma for hours without any breaks in time. Nebulizing diffusers disperse a greater amount of essential oil at one time and might need to be refilled more often. Similarly, evaporative and heat diffusers need to be refilled more quickly.

Price

When it comes to price, heat diffusers are the clear winner, followed respectively by evaporative and ultrasonic diffusers. Nebulizing diffusers are the costliest of all.

So, Which One is Best?

After weighing all criteria of aromatherapy diffusers, ultrasonic diffusers are the best. Nebulizing diffusers are second to the Ultrasonic one but the biggest drawback is the cost. Low longevity, greater energy consumption, and the irritating sound made it a disadvantage.

Things to Keep in Mind when Choosing the Right Diffuser

You now have the information for purchasing a diffuser for getting the most from the therapeutic benefits from the essential oils in many fragrances. When you feel perplexed by the many options, do not buy just anything that will not be the best one for your needs. Delightful diffusers of greatest quality and features will last years and are easy to get for less than $100.

The following tips will capture your attention for the best features for a hassle-free shopping experience when you are carefully checking out oil diffusers.

1. Water Capacity—Water determines how long a diffuser will keep operating. When you want your diffuser to run for many hours at a time, you will need one that holds more water in its reservoir. The choice ultrasonic diffusers can hold 80 to 100 mL (2.7-3.38 ounces) of water.

2. Operating Time—Consider this feature for the length of time you want to run your diffuser. Some units operate for 3-4 hours and others run 6-10 hours. If you want to have your diffuser run all night when sleeping for its therapeutic benefits, you will want to select a diffuser that runs nonstop for longer hours.

3. Program and Timer Options—Practiced diffuser users can tell you the importance of these two functions. For best results with the essential oils, diffusers are super effective producing your desired results in small amounts. A micro-fine mist can be dispersed with a superior dispenser. It is not always necessary to have your diffuser run constantly, unless that is what you want. Maybe you want your diffuser to run for a certain length of time and then restart. If you want that, shop for a programmable diffuser with time cycle selections. This will control the amount of your treasured essential oils accomplishing the best possible benefits.

4. Variable Airflow Output—Controlling the air pressure allows the scattering of the essential oils where you can check the fragrance intensity. It is similar to how fast you want a fan to run.

5. Room Coverage—Read the specifications before buying a diffuser. This will tell you the area it will cover. Trendy diffusers cover 200-300-square feet and some cover up to 500-square feet. You might be disappointed if you purchase a diffuser not able to cover the area you want. Reading customer reviews will help you when they discuss their experiences.

6. Automatic Shutoff—Users prefer this option because it safeguards against the unit burning out. When you are preoccupied, you will have no worries. When the diffuser runs out of water, it will automatically shut off. This is a wonderful feature for when you are sleeping; the unit will shut off and be safe and sound in the morning.

7. LED Light Effects—Almost all quality diffusers have a built-in light. They are used as night-lights as well as for daytime enjoyment. You can choose the changing colors you like and the light can be turned off in most units. You might want to check out which diffusers have light dimming and brightening capabilities.

8. Noise Level—Some people do not mind the slight noise and others do. If you are one of those people who like quiet in your space, check the suppliers who carry Whisper Quiet Technology. With the whisper quiet diffusers, you will not hear the slight buzzing or water trickling sounds.

9. Warranty and Guarantees—Most manufacturers provide a 1-year warranty for their products. Some warranties can be for longer periods and most offer money back guarantees for up to 6 months if you are dissatisfied with their product.

10. Size and Shape—Today’s aromatherapy oil diffusers are gorgeous to look at and add a touch of flair to your home, office, spa, or salon décor. The designs, colors, and shapes are stylish and trendy for the discerning and sophisticated buyer. Some shapes are contemporary in design such as a candle shape, pyramidal shape, disc, and freeform in shape. Shop for just the right one for your special place, never being disappointed.

Size does matter and is dependent on portability if that is an important highlight for your lifestyle. If you want to carry the diffuser in your purse or satchel, a more compact style will work best for you.

Step-by-Step Guide for Choosing the Perfect Oil Diffuser

Answer the questions below to help you make a decision for purchasing a diffuser:

1. Where do You Want to Use Your Diffuser?

Where you plan to use your oil diffuser will help in your selection process. If you plan to use it in the bedroom for its LED light effect, consider a diffuser with a turn-off switch. Some people do not sleep well with a light on and some do not care for lights when relaxing or napping.

2. What is the Purpose for Using the Diffuser?

If you plan to use the diffuser for sleep or relaxing, it should have no noise effect and the LED light. To realize the therapeutic advantages the diffuser needs to be able to maintain the efficacy of the essential oils.

For a child’s room, the diffuser needs to have an automatic shutoff feature. If you or someone suffers from allergies, has irritated, or rough, flaky, dry skin, the diffuser will perform as a misting humidifier and air purifier.

Ask yourself why you desire to have an aromatherapy oil diffuser. Depending on your needs, the best selections are the Ultrasonic, a Nebulizer, or an Evaporative or Heat Diffuser. These diffusers function differently; therefore, it will be important for you to consider the way each one operates. If you want intense healing without the price being a concern, then the Nebulizer will be your best choice. The Ultrasonic diffuser is great for simply relaxing, air purification, and humidification, and are cost-effective.

3. Get Help from Reviews

When you take time to read reviews from other diffuser users, you will no doubt have many of your questions and concerns answered for you. You will find on the Internet the manufacturer’s claims, people’s experiences using diffusers, and find advice about the coverage area, ease of use, operation times, the LED light pros and cons, and how to clean the unit. You can also ask questions to the reviewers and they will come back with an answer.

4. Compare Prices Within Your Budget

After deciding on the oil diffuser you want to purchase, check to see if it aligns with your budget. Check to see which seller offers the best price, discounts, deals, and bonuses. With a little time invested in searching, you will find the best value for your money. Good luck and happy shopping!

Do all diffusers use water it only the ones that are humidifiers as well?

    1. Melissa

      RE: Jay’s message on November 3, 2015
      Hi Jay,
If I understand your question correctly, you are asking, “Do all diffusers use water or can they be used as humidifiers as well?”
Diffusers take water and can be operated with or without the oils. Even with oils, they have a mist that is full of moisture, so that is humidification. You might not want any oils, so run it with only water for a moist mist with no fragrance. A few diffusers use only oils without water.

A website full of interested data.

Melissa, your page was full of wonderful information. I get a bit overwhelmed with things so I am hoping you can guide me a bit. I want an essential oil diffuser that is easy to use and clean. Not noisy. I want to be able to really smell the oils and get benefit from it but I don’t need it to be overpowering either as I may not use it then. I get migraines so sometimes smells are hard to take. I don’t want to spend a lot of money either. I’m thrifty. Could you suggest the top choice matching what I’m looking for? Thank you so much

  5. Melissa

    Hi Jenn,
Thanks for your note of November 4, and letting us know you liked the information. Diffusers are easy to clean–all of them–most are whisper-quiet at this page or this page. Most are affordable. If you have migraines, be sure to look at this link for beneficial oils for those nasty headaches.

Essentials oils can disintegrate some materials such as plastics. What materials should one look for in choosing the proper diffuser

    1. Lydia

Unfortunately both of these diffusers are made of plastic inside.

  7. chris

I want to buy an aromatherapy diffuser and don’t have time for it to be shipped. NOBODY carries them in stores locally or even within 50 miles of me. Why are they only online?

    1. Melissa

      Hello Chris,

Thanks for your note of December 6. I do not know where you live, so cannot speak for your area. Diffusers are available in larger box stores and high-end department stores. Why not buy online? It’s cheaper that way. Some diffusers on Amazon ship out within two days—maybe you have that much time? You can call around rather than driving. Check in the beauty and body departments of larger shops.

      Regards,
      Melissa

    Susan

    1. Melissa

      Hi Susan,

I hope this will be helpful and that you come back here to visit often.

  14. Kim

Holy moly! This is one of the most informative sites I’ve come across in a long time! I have some ultrasonic diffusers, but am thinking of adding a nebulizing diffuser to the mix. Leaning towards the ‘obris nox merus’ by Aromis or the Organic Aromas raindrop diffuser. Approximately how many hours would you anticipate the oils lasting if diffusing a low volume? Do you recommend one of these over the other? Thanks!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Kim,

The Professional Grade (Orbis Nox Merus) from Aromis has many quality features. One being no water or heat is used and it’s quite popular. When on the low mode, oils last longer and probably about 4 hours. Organic Aromas.com has the same picture as the Aromis Orbis Nox Mercus. Curious. The Aromis brand gets 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon and it’s a well-liked diffuser. Check the features and price and then decide which one is best for you.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  15. B

    Hi Melissa

Thank you for your great informative article. I’m still unsure what diffuses gives out the least amount of humidity.

    1. Melissa

      Hi B,

All diffusers put out low humidity. It is not the same as a house humidifier or vaporizer. The mist is quite low. I dislike humidity, so these putting out such a small amount of humidity does not disrupt my flow in life.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  16. Second Times the Charm

I would like to switch from the candle burners I have been using for years in my store and at home to essential oil diffusers but am having trouble finding a diffuser for my store – what would you recommend for a store that is about 700-800 sq feet. I was planning to join young living to get my oils but I do not really care for the look and cost of their large room diffuser…

    1. Melissa

      Hi Charm,

There are many diffusers on this page that will cover 700 to 800-square feet. Each brand tells the square footage. They are cost-effective, and, yes, Young Living is a high-end producer, but of high-quality oils and diffusers. Here are some recommendations: ZAQ, QUOOZ, dōTERRA®, and more here. I hope you find the one that works perfectly in your store. As for candles, they use chemicals that can be toxic to sensitive individuals. The same for plug-in air fresheners.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

      Hi Simone,

I cannot recommend a fragrance because we all smell differently. Why not try a sampler pack and see which oil is the best for you?

I’ve been thinking of buying a diffuser (for medical reasons). Is there a real difference or benefit between a diffuser without water vs. with water? Thank you for this great article so I can make a better choice and decision when I make a final selection.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sandra,

Diffusers that do not use water only putting the oils on a pad have more oil potency since the essential oils are not diluted by mixing with water. Living BeAtitudes Aromatherapy Nebulizer Diffuser is waterless and so is Organic Aromas Raindrop Nebulizing Essential Oil Diffuser. Visit the nebulizer page and read about these great units.

Hope this helps you and that you stay healthy and happy!

    Hi Melissa
Thanks for sharing this valuable information
    A Little help.
Do you have any idea on essential oil consumption when using a nebulizer diffuser?
e.g. 10 ml of essential oil every 1 operating hour at min/max airflow output
    Thanks so much in advance

    1. Melissa

      Hi Francisco,
I have no idea how to calculate essential oil consumption. You might want to ask that question in a search engine on line.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  21. Wendy

    Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your great article. My husband is hesitant to get a diffuser, worried that the mist or oils might ruin furniture, countertops, or cabinets. Do you know if this is a problem?

    Thank you!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Wendy,

I see no problem with your furniture. The oil mixes with the water and puts a mist into the air. You can always put a towel under the diffuser if your husband is worried about oil on the furniture. My diffusers do not ruin furniture and other people have no problem.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  22. Kathy

Is there a benefit of the spout on the rim vs coming straight out of the middle of the top? Should both work equally the same????

  23. kathy

is there any benefits or pros/cons of the diffusers that the mist comes out of the rim vs out of the middle top of the lid?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Kathy,

I read both of your notes above on February 14. Some find the side mist to be more directional for missing straight to a baby for instance. There is no difference except for direction. Hope this helps.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  24. Nikhi

    Hi Melissa,
I purchased a diffuser for my daughter who is pregnant. When she received the box, there was a warning label on it that reference “California Proposition 65 Warning…This product is fabricated from materials which may contain chemical knows to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.” As I’m sure you can imagine, it has scared us away from this particular diffuser because it doesn’t tell us WHAT material it is and researching that warning doesn’t give you specifics either. Do you have any information about this?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Nikhi,

I do not live in California, but do know that state has strict rules for the environment and products we buy.
The material is probably the plastic water container.
Please check here for ceramic units and here for glass diffusers.

Best of luck to your daughter.

Other than Diffuser & Nebulizer, can Electric Essential Oil Burner deliver the same benefit and results?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Jessie,

Yes, electric essential oil burners deliver.

  26. Amber

Hi, This was so helpful. I am currently looking for a diffuser and I was wondering about negative ions. Do all ultrasonic diffusers make negative ions? When I read the features of the different models, not all of them mention it.
    Thanks

    1. Melissa

      Hi Amber,

With a mist using water, you will have negative ions. That is the beauty of nature. Take a shower, walk in the rain, visit a waterfall–negative ions and they are good for uplifting your mood.

      Regards,
      Melissa

      1. Kathy

I’m so thrilled to see this question and response…thank you! I am looking at the bamboo diffuser but was questioning it because they don’t mention anything about the negative ions or air purification.

I have learned so much from your site! Thank you for guiding me on my essential oil journey ?

  27. Lucy

    Hi Melissa,

Which Essential Oil Diffuser brand you like best, I need some suggestions from you, Thanks!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Lucy,

I like to put a small one in my car–see it here and I like the Cool Breeze that you can see here because it is so big and cute and will mist for many hours.

      Thanks for writing and asking.

        Hi Melissa

I love your page, and your thoughtful responses to those who write to it! What a delight –

I have an electric Oil Garden Aromatherapy diffuser and sadly did not keep the instruction sheet so am finding it baffling to assemble.

Do you have access to nstructions for this unit? ( In Essence oils are sold alongside this diffuser).

        Warm regards

        Jacqui ( Perth, Australia)

        1. Melissa

          Hi Jacqui,

Contact the company online http://www.oilgarden.com.au/ using the “contact” at the top right to ask for an instruction manual. They are in Australia. Hope this helps you.

  29. Anna

I need a diffuser for my work. I am a receptionist and sits in a big wide open lobby. I want a diffuser that I can position directly on me. Is there such a thing?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Anna,

All diffusers can be placed in front of you. Try the very small Verelily NOVA that uses no water and you can also put it in your car! I love this one and it works nicely at my office desk too.

      Regards,
      Melissa

    2. Eve

Yes. I have a small diffuser that can run on batteries or electricity called “Nature’s Bounty”. Just ten dollars from Walmart. Add a few drops of essential oil onto a pad and turn on! No water needed. Very effective for a party of one!

      1. Melissa

        Hi Eve,

        Ours are better! (smile)

Are all the five star diffusers food grade in that they can hold up to the oils without melting? I’ve heard reviews of diffusers deteriorating and melting from the oils.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Dalyce,

      True, they will not melt.

  33. Shari

    Hello,
Your article is very helpful. I am looking to purchase a diffuser. I am moving to an extremely dry climate and will also need a humidifier. But I’m concerned that the ultrasonic diffuser won’t provide enough humidity and I’ll need to run a humidifier and a diffuser. Any advice about how I could accomplish both with one thing?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Shari,

A dry climate is where I once lived and loved it! A diffuser does not offer a great amount of moisture emitting from the top. The Ultrasonic Cool Breeze Dinosaur Egg diffuser is a large unit that disperses large amounts of moisture on high. I live in a very humid climate and this one added more humidity in an already humid house that I have.

Sorry to say if you want an abundance of humidity you would need to install a unit in your furnace, unless you have electric heat, where that cannot be done. A whole-house humidifier might be the way to go for lots of humidity where you can control the percent level of humidity, usually at 30-35% in the summer. When I lived in Colorado, I had an Aprilaire® that I loved and had professionally installed in my existing furnace.

If that is overkill for you, there are small portable units that you can move from room-to-room. The Air-O-Swiss humidifier is excellent.

I hope these options help you with your humidity situation.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

    Melissa:

Your reviews are very helpful! What I keep getting confused about is the timer. I would like one that I can program to come on automatically everyday for x hours and then turn off or comes on automatically everyday several different times a day. Would prefer one that just uses essential oils with a bottle.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Harriett,

Timers can seem confusing. The best one with a bottle is the Verelily NOVA that is ultrasonic using no water. You can run it from 1 to 4 hours and other settings. Check it out here. You might like the ArOmis shown here.

  35. Kenneth Hass

Hello Melissa. I have been to this site twice and have enjoyed all the comments and information I have found here. I am still fairly new at being an essential oil user, but am learning more all the time. Still, it can be rather daunting trying to separate fact from fiction. For instance: I was told by my daughter in law that it was okay to use my cold mist humidifier as an essential oil diffuser (adding the oil to the water), but then I read somewhere else this is wrong!!!???? BTW: She is a Distributor for essential oils (the Big company). So, just saying I appreciate the input I get from this site. Thanks again Melissa. Ken

    1. Melissa

      Hi Kenneth,

Of course you can use cold water. A cool mist humidifier puts out cool moisture, so why would you put in warm or hot water? That would be rather silly and defeat its purpose. You cannot use a humidifier as an essential oil diffuser no way! The thick oil will clog the holes, tubes, etc. Why would you do that when the instructions tell you not to? Our site is fairly accurate.

      Thanks,
      Melissa

  36. Sandy Sherwood

I have found that the disk fails in most of my diffusers. What is the best product for that issue?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sandy,

There’s no specific product that is best for this issue. If the disk failed, contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

      Best,
      Melissa

  37. Melissa

    Hi Andrew,

This world is made of plastic! What “proper substitute” do you suggest? Why don’t you write to each manufacturer of plastics and institute a change? I am not the person to bitch to. I don’t make the products or sell the products, therefore I have no control.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

    1. Andrew Jordaan

Hi Melissa. Firstly the world in not made of plastic, if it were, we wouldn’t have essential oils. Secondly you don’t know how much I am in contact with disreputable plastic manufacturers. Third, I didn’t mean it as a personal attack, I was hoping to raise your awareness as you were touting BP A free, as if that actually meant something in the scheme of healthier plastics that are heated, because as I have pointed out, it doesn’t.
The industry is using equally dangerous Bisphenols in plastic and it would be really helpful, regardless of whether you make or sell them, to stop promoting them.
A proper substitute could be any substance that wasn’t toxic when heated.
Ceramic or stone for starters, toughened glass wouldn’t go amiss either.

  38. Denise Solano

We are in search of a diffuser for our bathrooms in our Orthodontic practice. We would also if the right one is found for the entire office. Help as I am a rookie at knowing what to look for.
    Thank you

    1. Melissa

      Hi Denise,

Even people having braces put on would like a nice smelling fragrance. Read about different sizes here for the rest rooms and entire office.

  39. Stathis

    Hi there!
Is there any kind of electric oil diffuser made of stone, ceramic or anything away of plastic?
I think is a very important information before i proceed to my 1st experience.
    Thank you.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Stathis,

Yes, there are ceramic diffusers and you can read about them here.

This link is not working. Is there an updated location?

  40. Sally Middleton

    Hello,
You mentioned the nebulizer diffuser goes through oil faster. If using a nebulizer diffuser for only a couple of hours a day, how much oil will go through in a month….based on needing the aroma for a large life living room? Which brand do you recommend? I see the Aimcare wooden/glass nebulizer diffuser gets good reviews.

    Thanks,
    Sally

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sally,

I run my nebulizers all day and can get 2 weeks use from the oil. All the oil brands are good listed here.

I am not familiar with Aimcare, but we do have the glass wooden ones here.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  41. Lisa Brady

Hi there!! Love all your suggestions!! I have an eterniti diffuser but it just doesn’t seem to put out enough aroma and it certainly does not last. Does any one make one that is powerful, strong and long lasting? Thanks so much in advance!!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Lisa,

A nebulizer diffuser uses pure oils and no water. You might want to try one for longer lasting fragrances. You can read about nebulizers here.

  42. Kathryn

Wow, lots of wonderful information here! I have 2 diffusers and a large room. Neither diffuser is sufficient to cover the whole room. I asked friends on Facebook for suggestions and one friend posted this link. Everything I need to know in one place! Thank you so much. It’s really helpful.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Kathryn,

Look at the Ultrasonic Cool Breeze Dinosaur Egg that holds 500 mL of water with a larger upcoming mist. I like it very much and you can see it here.

      Melissa

  43. Steve

I’ve used many humidifiers and I have learned that I will only use the ones that convert the water to steam as opposed to the cool mist humidifiers. They are also the cheapest, usually under $20. If you use an ultrasonic humidifier or aroma machine you must use distilled water or you will end up with a lot of “white dust” all over your house which is really just the minerals from the water. Distilled water is very expensive for a humidifier if you need 2-4 gallons per day. Can someone recommend an aroma machine that does not use ultrasonics to dispense the oil fragrance? I am not sure that heating the oil destroys any benefits. Do I really want micro droplets of oil (and water) with an ultrasonic machine being ejected into my living space for me to ingest? Maybe a little heat with a quiet fan without water would be best.

    1. Kristen

Hi Steve, read your review and actually wrote one up myself. It’s awaiting moderation. I am using cold air diffuser. Trust me its by far the best product ever. Check out aromatechsystems.com they mostly sell cold air diffusers but one product they sell uses a small fan, called aroma cube. Very small and doesn’t cover much space but maybe what you are looking for other wise check out the AroMini that I bought. Happy New Year!

    2. Melissa

      Hi Steve,

Larger water used humidifiers are different from small diffuser using essential oils. All are cool mist with no heaters. Humidifiers should also use only distilled water for the same reason–white mineral dust from tap water. You can also attach a reverse osmosis water purifier to your kitchen sink to always have the best filtered water. I have one and love it. Oils are never heated and would destroy the benefits of essential oils. You will not be “injesting” (eating) the oils, but the benefits from inhaling are wonderful.

I don’t know what to tell you to solve your dilemma.

      Melissa

  44. Kristen

Hi Melissa, i hope you had amazing Christmas with your family.

I love your site and find it quite helpful. You do great work :))

I bumped into this article about the comparison of various diffusers and I had to comment on your review about nebulization diffusers. Before I purchased mine recently I used your article to make my decision, you did sell me on the ultrasonic diffuser and I ended up buy-ing a few of them but to my disappointment I wasn’t impressed. So I had to dig a bit further and finally made a purchase from a company in Canada called AromaTech, aromatechsystems.com

I had a chance to use it for 4 months now and here are my findings. With a lot of respect to you and your blog (which again I love) I disagree on some of your points and would love to add my input if thats ok: 1) noise level, 2) refilling 3) higher price point.

I’ll address each and every one of these points. I do want to note that my experience of cold air diffusers is only from one company, AromaTech, who by the way have treated me very well and I was surprised by their customer service and support, not to mentioned for a Canadian company to have a wear house in USA its nice for quick cheap shipping option.

    1. Noise level. Depending on what diffuser you looked at while making your review there are a number of diffusers out there that are whisper silent. The diffuser I bought is called AroMini and it is incredible. I use it in my spa. The noise level is not noticeable. As you can imagine silence in a spa is everything and we have about 5 of these machines in different rooms. No complaints for customers only positive feedback about how wonderful it smells.

    2. Refills. Fragrance refills are done every month, running at about 12 hours a day. Some oils we use refills are needed every 2 months because they are stronger then others and would last a long time. Our maintenance is practically non existent. Comparing to ultrasonic diffusers we had to refill multiple times a month and the scent output was nowhere near as good or as consistent as with the AromaTech unit.

    3. Price point. You have to compare this apples to apples and I believe these two diffusers shouldn’t even be in the same category and more so not in the same league. As with anything you can’t expect the same quality from a $20 air freshener and a $200 cold air diffuser. Honda VS BMW, Organic home grown veggies vs store bought full of pesticides, Mac vs PC :). For example LeLabos diffuser is $500 +. Its a beautiful piece of art and I love the look of it (I ended up splurging and buying it for my bedroom as I just love its rugged and raw look and the light that it comes with fades in and out with intensity). To be honest I over paid by a ton but its worth it. Coverage is ok and I knew it when I was buying it. Le Labo has awesome fragrances that they sell with their diffusers, try Noir 29, yammy! Try finding a piece of art in an ultrasonic diffuser, that provides great space coverage and diffuses a fragrance in a concentrated dose to really take in the benefits of the EOs.
Back to price point. There are a number of nebulizing diffusers that are very inexpensive. Again, you have to look at coverage – how much space does it cover? If design is important then that counts. What are the actual benefits you are getting from having a concentrated dose of EOs diffused vs water and a few drops? AromaTech’s AroMini I think costs around $300, and it covers 1,000 sq.ft. We actually have a subscription plan on these machines which is just awesome. Oils are shipped monthly and we only paid $65 per month per machine. Great investment for a great reward.

My biggest complaint about the ultrasonics is they simply don’t work in spaces that are larger then 100 sq.ft. I used to spend $200 monthly on oils for my ultrasonic diffusers. They diffuse so fast and scent doesn’t travel far, and of course constant refilling of the water tank was a pain. No matter how much oil I have left in my diffuser it always smells the same, which means that I ALWAYS get that consistent scent at any point of the month.

I also go to a yoga studio that runs ultrasonic diffusers in their bathrooms, well not to my surprise I can never smell the scent.

From my experience and in my humble opinion diffusers that use cold air diffusion technology are a winner.

Keep up the great work! Thanks for taking the time to read this!

    Happy New Year!

How much electricity does an electric oil diffuser use with light? Its a small unit.

    1. Melissa

      Gladys,

Virtually none! About the same as a 40-Watt light bulb.

      Melissa

  46. Sherry

    Hi Melissa,
Per Lea’s video one day, she highlighted the Jasmine Diffuser. I noticed the base is warm and I’m wondering if it destroys the therapeutic qualities of the eo’s.
    Thx, Sherry

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sherry,

The diffuser’s base will be a little warm from the tiny motor to operate the fan. The water stays cold in the reservoir so the benefits from the oils are not destroyed. Does that make sense?

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  47. Micki S

I continue to be impressed with the vast array of topics and wealth of information provided on your website. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

  48. Rebekah Smith

Is one kind / brand of diffuser better than another or are they all basically the same?

Thank you for all the good information.

    R~

    1. Melissa

      Hi Rebekah,

Most all basically all the same having a fan and switches. Better units have LED lights, different times for running and larger water reservoirs. Ultrasonic units use water and the nebulizers use pure essential oils straight without water. It’s all what you want: size, use with/without water, with batteries to use in the car, lights or no lights.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  49. Amanda

Does it matter if your diffuser is not BPA free?? I know most times it is said that making sure to stay BPA free is more for plastics that come in contact with skin?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Amanda,

I wouldn’t use BPA plastic with kids or babies. How well BPAs leach into the water and/or oils is not well understood by me. Personally, as an adult, I don’t really care. I never have my face breathing into the vapors. As plastic water bottle’s plastics break down, you could get BPA into your system. Read more about it here.
Today plastic water pipes are used in homes.

      Best regards,
      Melissa

  50. Sherry

I’m trying to find a non-plastic diffuser (not nebulizing, but something more cost-effective to operate — ultrasonic). I’m assuming from your wealth of information (and it IS a wealth, by the way!) that if you don’t say anything about it being BPA-free, that it’s plastic that isn’t BPA-free — still plastic. Do you know of any ceramic or glass diffusers — preferably that will also allow citrus to be used?

    Thanks!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sherry,

The #1 ultrasonic here is my favorite. The #6, above glass is very good. Not all plastics are BPA-free. I only note that distinction when it is true.

      Hope this helps you.

      Best regards,
      Melissa
