A lot of good essential oils brands will test their oils in house, or have their oils tested by a verified third party for purity and quality standards.
As of yet, today there are no regulatory guidelines on essential oils for brands to adhere to and no set definition for claims like “Therapeutic Grade” or “Clinical Grade”.
It’s been known for some companies to add fillers, synthetics and unnatural constituents to their oils, which dilutes the the purity.

What Grade of Essential Oil Do You Need?
If you plan to use the essential oil for your kids, the family, or your four-legged furry friend, it is better to purchase the 100% therapeutic oil. For alternative health uses, or use in a spa or salon, use 100% essential therapeutic oils. Therapeutic oils are distilled under more strict guidelines without solvents. Procuring from a reputable essential oil supplier will cost more, but it’s worth it in the end. You get what you pay for.
Essential Oil Grades and What They Mean
- Grade A—is a pure unadulterated oil that employs a rigorous distillation process
- Grade B—the natural food grade essential oil that is organic and certified with a small amount of trace chemicals
- Grade C—the perfume grade that is highly concentrated, and unaltered, but contains some chemicals and solvents
- Floral Water—These are water soluble fragrances also called Flower Water and are low quality essential oils synthetically made (not from nature) and are used for skin products
Avoiding Sub-Standard and Synthetic Oils
You may not realize, but a lot of essential oils are synthetic. This is because they are extremely convincing and can be passed off as expensive and genuine very easily.
Synthetic oils, as well as cheaper, sub-standard oils, may contain toxins. This means your essential oil, if synthetic or substandard, may be harmful to your skin and may not provide the aromatherapy benefits generally sought after for essential oils.
While it can be very hard to distinguish between a real essential oil and a sub-standard or synthetic one, there are signs that you need to look out for.
Type of Container/Name
Real oils will generally be sold in small containers, likely four oz. or smaller, with a dark colored tint to the container and an eye dropper. A real essential oil will also commonly include the Latin name of the desired plant on the container.
Generally, containers for real essential oils will include a label saying it is 100% pure oil, mentioning how it is wild-crafted and/or a USDA seal. Once you get a chance to open the container, if the cap is screwed on, it should be sealed with something called “orifice reducer.”
In addition to that, cheap plastic or rubber will not be used on real oils, as it can break down and affect the oil.
Price
As a general rule of thumb, it will be very rare to find real essential oils at a very low price. In other words, be wary of how much you are spending to make sure that you truly are getting a real product.
Smell

No, I am not familiar with NYR oils shown on that website here http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/aromatherapy/aromatherapy-oils-and-blends/essential-oils/ They are from the UK and the prices are in pounds, not dollars. I do see a few of the oils on Amazon.
I have no knowledge of this company. Maybe other visitors to our website here will offer their experiences using this brand.

I found your article very informative and helpful. Thank you for your work. Two things I’d like to say. There’s a really nice company in Oregon called Essential Three. If you get a chance to review them, I think you’ll like them a lot. Second, in the pros and cons it would be interesting to see which companies are willing to share test results with us. Any company can say they run testing on their oils to ensure purity, so I started calling around and asked for a data sheet on just one oil so I could see it. Most were very willing to comply. The ones who would not made me wonder why they were not willing to prove the purity of their oils. Plant Therapy publishes their results for every oil. Since I have been using YL for over a year, I was disappointed to learn they were not willing to share test results at all.

Hello! I just wanted to let you know that some of your facts on DT are confusing (incorrect if I am reading them right). I am a DT wellness advocate (after many years of researching and testing various oils). I love this company for many reasons (I won’t take time to post them all). One thing that might be confusing for some people is under the “cons” you say that they don’t have their own farms. It is important to know that this is purposeful. The get their oils through Co-Impact Sourcing which pays farmers globally to tend and harvest the crops where they grow naturally. The other clarification is that you said they don’t distill their plants for the oils. What do you mean by that?

First off just want to say thank you for researching and taking all your time and energy in putting this information out there. That’s gotta be frustrating. I have used the majority of the essential oil brands out on the market today. The only essential oils I have found to work is Young Living, Gardens Eden, Plant Therapy – even though their product seems diluted, NOW brand is awesome for use in cleaning, sanitizing, air freshener; DoTerra oils seem to all have a vanilla added to them to make their oils smell appetizing which is great for diffusing I guess, and I do like their bergamot more than any other essential oil company, I have also used Puritans Pride essential oils and they are great just for diffusing or cleaning with, they are too runny imo. I really like RMO except for the fact that their Immunity is nothing like Thieves from YL nor like OnGuard by DoTerra, it is great however for diffusing in the fall. Heritage is a good one as well. Ameo is close to Young Living in quality and purity but they price gouge you on everything like all MLMs do. I am a wholesale member with Young Living, but I do not sell them because I use a wide variety of all different essential oil brands for many different things. I really am thinking about just using RMO because in my opinion the rank second in essential oils and they do not price gouge you nor is the taxes unreasonable and shipping is free. Also in doing the styrofoam test..Young Living and Ameo is first in breaking through, NOW brand and RMO brand a close second followed by DoTerra, Plant Therapy, Edens Garden…the other essential oils just stayed on the styrofoam and made no difference in the chemical breakthrough.

Hi everyone! Does anyone have an opinion on Organic Infusions? It is a company I have found, and used confidently in that they seem to have more Certified Organic Essential Oils than any other company. I now only buy from them (unless I’m buying Vetiver, which they do not sell organically or otherwise) because of their certified varieties. Has anyone else heard of them? Any comments?

Because of the excitement of discovering essential oils I have explored around and found a small local distillery company that sales essential oils I believe they don’t farm their own. I’m wondering what you might know of it: The Essential Oil Company located in Portland, Oregon. The office is small but has a smelling bar to sit and smell which was very nice but the office person was busily working and had no time to answer my questions let alone the in-depth questions I have. This place is only open for 8 hours during early day M-F so with my working Schedule I can only go there on a vacation day. Does any one know of The Essential Oil Company.

I think Radha Beauty might’ve taken your advice. I’m looking at bottles I just purchased this week (the set of six: lavender, orange, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemongrass and peppermint). On the label of each bottle, it does say the scientific name of the plant uses. On the orange, lemongrass, and eucalyptus, it says what part of the plant was used (peels, whole plant, leaves). The other three do not say. (No information on where they were grown included in the packaging though.) Also mine came with an insert with a paragraph on each oil explaining their potential uses.

You say a wooden box is the best way to store oils, but I’d like to know why? How is it better than a storage device that is cloth or plastic or some other material?

Wood is natural—oils are natural. Plastic can get warm and have condensation. How you store your oils is about their shelf life. I keep some of my oils in a metal box with a tight lid. I prefer wood boxes with compartments with a tight fitting lid to keep the sun out. Oils like a cool dark place to live.
Oils are expensive and I like to protect my investment. Oils should be packaged in dark brown/amber glass to filter out the ultra violet rays from the sun. Oils should not be sitting in the sun anyway. Some bottles are now in greens, blues, and violet. Oils oxidize with heating and cooling such as sitting on a shelf or windowsill.
Citrus oils deteriorate quicker than any other oils. You can keep them in the fridge. Your carrier oils do best in the fridge also. Some oils will turn solid in the fridge, for example, fennel, star anise, and some others. You will need to warm them up to use them. Rub the bottle in your hands. Take them out of the fridge about 12 hours before you use them to warm them up then shake them. You don’t want to put jojoba oil in the fridge because it will become as hard as butter. This indicates that it does not have cheap additives.
Back to boxes: I like wood as do many other people. It keeps the oils all together in one place, sunlight, and heat out. You never want extreme temperatures in your environment that can ruin the oils. Even lipstick becomes limp when a home is too hot.
Some oils are slightly volatile and evaporate, so keep the lid on tight. In addition, put in your storage box. Never leave oils near the stove, candles, or fires because they are flammable and can go up in flames. Safety is important, so store your oils in a box in one place.
Never put your oils in plastic bottles or containers. The oils will eat up the plastic or melt it.
Hope this helps you and you can purchase wood boxes that are inexpensive.

Hello!! I thoroughly enjoyed your list and found it very informative! I’m just starting out with oils and have ordered two kits from Healing Solutions for myself and my mother to diffuse. I recently stumbled on some bad reviews that state that Healing Solutions is not selling “pure” or “therapeutic grade” oils. And now, seeing your list I am a little apprehensive to use them when they arrive. Do you think they could be harmful? I really don’t want to give my mother something that could be detrimental to her health or mine for that matter.

I just attended a workshop on Nature’s Sunshine essential oils. And yes, they are associated with an MLM. The presentation was very informative (I am just starting to get my toes wet in this area) & the presenter obviously sells the oils as well as uses/swears by them. I’ve also been contacted by a doTerra “consultant” online wanting my “business” as well. While the doTerra brand costs less than the Nature’s Sunshine brand, I am a “try before you buy” kind of lady & I was impressed with the quality of the Nature’s Sunshine brand.

Recently I have contracted a staph infection that is very bad, not sure where it came from but have been trying many things in doTerra and other brands of oils to make it go away. after months nothing is totally cleared it away.
I believe I picked the staph up in one of my hospital stay.
I have branched out into other brands, just recently, as the doTerra is so expensive.
My husband has hereditary lung asthma / asserbated by ranchers lung, allergies, haying and cropping etc that comes with working a ranch / farm. He is almost mid 80’s now and I only use organic natural oils.
I have yet to find “which” OIL or essential oil combination / blending of oils that will make my staph infection go away. I do not know where I got the staph infection … one of many hospital stays or where.

I caught a skin staph infection. Do not know where it came from. Also, I just read a few days ago I found out that taking a certain brand of vitamins has “staph” in them and I was taking that brand of vitamins but not the gummy kind they said had the staff. Do not know if the NON Gummy had staph in them also. Anyway. I have tried for a long while to get this staff infection gone – over 1 1/2 years now. I just quit the vitamins , after verifying with doctor that it might of been the vitamins…but cannot prove it. But I am desparate to heal this staff infection. Everything I have read tells me to use a different oil or brand of oil. I am confused as to what one / or two / or blend to use. It has been several months.. really need this gone. I have tossed the vitamins … praying the oils will not heal my staff. On a better note the doterra oil BREATHE and other oils added has miraculously helped my husbands lifetime asthma / asserbated by years of haying and ranch living. He is so much better… threw all his inhailers and prescription medications away….years ago. These organice doTerra oils have saved his life. Praying I find help and cure for my staph infection using natural oils.

I am so sorry for the virus you might have contracted in the hospital. Please see your doctor with your husband too for testing. You need to do this immediately because there are viruses, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection that is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that is becoming resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. It is important you see your doctor now. I urge you to put essential oils on the back burner for now and have this condition treated by your healthcare provider as soon as you read this. See a dermatologist for your skin issues.

doTerra (hubby _ Breath and other doTerra oils _ diffuser and roll on) , First Botany _ Myrrh, Majestic Pure _ Clary Sage (seizures) , Radha (Lemon) both of us , Majestic Pure: Peppermint , Fab Naturals Eucalyptus and other doTerra oils not listed. I have been buying doTerra for a couple of years for my husband’s lungs… it has helped like a miracle. Just need my staph gone on my arms.

Please first see your doctor without delay. Tea Tree oil is a generic name that can refer to over 300 varieties of the tea tree plant. Be sure to get Melaleuca alternifolia.
Oregano oil is considered to be the top oil for fighting infection. Oregano (species Origanum vulgare) from Turkey is high in the naturally occurring phenolic compound called cavracol that has been found to be more effective than 18 pharmaceutical drugs, and is very active against MRSA (if you have that bacteria). Do not put it on the skin without a carrier oil. Other beneficial oils are: eucalyptus, rosemary, lemongrass, cinnamon bark, geranium, and lavender.

My sister and I are using a lot of Young Living, but it does get very expensive, but as one of their reps said to me, “it helps put food on their table and gas in their cars.” I know everyone has to make a living, but I can’t afford to assist, but I do love their products. We keep trying other brands and right now, I’m real happy with Edens Garden, although they don’t yet have Sacred Frankincense. It does get overwhelming and confusing, that’s why I not only read articles, but most all the comments.

Frankincense Sacred Essential Oil (Boswellia sacra) is also commonly known as Olibanum, Olibanum Tree Oil, and Sacred Frankincense. Frankincense Sacred Essential Oil has a medium-strength balsamic, rich, warm, slightly spicy, sweet, and woody aroma presenting a base fragrance note and is also sold by Rocky Mountain Oils. It is an expensive oil!

I am surprised that none of you mentioned a GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer) report with the oils. It does not matter how big the farm is… Second are any of you certified in aromatherapy? Third do any of you know the percentage breakdown of your oils?
here is a recent report on a few oil companies and research I compiled after being certified in 2015:
Do You Know the ‘Company’ you Keep with your Essential Oils?
Ask yourself what company do you buy your essential oils from for there are plenty on the market and sold by ‘consultants’ or sales person who are not certified in aromatherapy. Therefore do you know what you are buying because the chemical breakdown from Rocky Mountain Oils, etc. to Aromatics International can be significant? Suffice it is to say, I have many people ask questions because they did an internet search for plantar fascitis and the internet search told the woman Frankincense would be beneficial. Now keep in mind, Frankincense comes in three different chemotypes: there is Bosewellia carterii, Boswellia serrata, Boswellia frereana and Boswellia sacra for $84 bucks after glancing at a peer review titled, “The Dirty Little Secret of Essential Oils” thus I am not convinced how valid this oil is therapeutically when people add dollar signs to holy water. Yet the consumer came up to my booth at the South Haven’s Farmer’s Market and asked if frankincense would be sufficient. I got a quizzical look because frankincense is better known for skin-nourishing properties and immune function; however, it can have anti-inflammatory qualities depending upon what batch a person buys due to the percentage of the chemical families noted in the GC/MS report (Black & Butje, 2015). Do you know what a GC/MS analysis can be? Be on ALERT for not all companies will give a Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer report information directly or at all such as Young Living and do Terra. etc. On the other hand, NOW company upon request will give the percent bars as information, which are confusing to read and are not clear on the percentage breakdown. Also, most people will not understand a higher percentage of para-cymene in one batch from one company is more potent with immune function than it is with inflammation. In the medical field in most cases when a diagnoses ends in a ‘itis’ it means inflammation: P*L*A*N*T*A*R F*A*S*C*I*T*I*S means inflammation on the plantar surface of the foot. In addition, plantar fascitis is just not only a foot problem but contractions and tight muscles of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of the leg. So, this prose is a consumer beware of what oil you buy and how much you spend. For instance, a 10 mL bottle bought at $23 at Aromatics International may be better than a 30 mL NOW oil for $29 at the local natural food store. At Aromatics International their batch of Boswellia carterii has 73 % of a-pinene, which is high in anti-inflammatory properties. Second, when an oil has high pinenes, a person who has breathing difficulties such as asthma needs a tolerance test; they may love the smell, but their lungs cannot tolerate the chemical family causing an adverse reaction. Whereas, Boswellia carterii bought from Rocky Mountain Oils their a-pinene is around 43% in the batch yet contain 17% p-cymene and 17 % b-phellandrene, which supports immune function. However, at Aromatics International p-cymene and b-phelandrene are less than 1 % in the same batch at the 73 percentage. So, lets break it down of what is best for the consumer. If a person is suffering from asthma, they may tolerate Rocky Mountain Oil with a 43 % a-pinene for their plantar fascitis or a person has a toenail fungus on the feet as well, In this case, Rocky Mountian Oil would be suggested. However, if a person tolerates the a-pinene and wants more potency and inflammation reduced quicker, then Aromatics International would be best. So, the next time you ask a person about an eseential oil ask if they are qualified with understanding the chemical families in the batch of oils sold. If they can only say, well it reduces inflammation, this is not enough. Second, ask if they know the proper dilution for the condition. If they do not move along… Due to the FDA being negligent, there is no licensure for selling essential oils yet there are certified aromatherapists. An essential oil should be treated as seriously as a prescribed drug. Tests should be run on the consumer for tolerance and allergies and if the oil can be toxic to the baby or the liver. Some oils are not safe for a pregnant mother and others are toxic to the liver. This makes titration on the skin very important.

As for plantar fasciitis (correct spelling), the plantar fascia (also called plantar aponeurosis) is a condition that I have, and continue to be bothered with it. Only exercise alleviates the horrific pain for the tight ligament that causes heel pain and more bottom foot pain even to the toes. Yes, I know “itis” means “inflammation of” and am knowledgeable in all of what you wrote above. Thanks for contributing and I hope you have much success in what you are passionate about.

Usually, the honorable firms state which oils are blends and/or with carrier oils. I do know the companies named on this website are pure oils. There is a page of wonderful blends that I love to use. Do you have any rating on ‘The Melaleuca Co.” essential oils? The brand is called “Pure”. They have single oils and blends. They have been in business for 30 years. Recently expanded they oils.

I appreciate the time that this must have taken. I have one concern about consistency in reporting. I am only familiar with a few different brands but all three companies I am familiar with use amber bottles to contain their product for distribution. You only mention this on one of these companies Pros. It seems more realistic to be consistent with your reporting. If you are going to mention something(amber bottles for instance), then mention that for all the companies for which you are reporting pros and cons. I know you have already put so much work into this and I think this one-to-one comparison could only benefit all your amazing work! It makes it more apples to apples than apples to oranges….even though they are both fruit….if you know what I mean.

I’ll tell you what, Lisa. Sometimes I know the bottle colors and sometimes I do not know. It’s easy to check the company out online and determine the bottle color.

I just purchased an aromatherapy set of EO blends brand name Peabody & Paisley Apothecary. All three blends (De-Stress, Headache, Sleep) have Glycine Soja (soybean oil) as the first ingredient. Is this ok. Directions say to hold 6-8 inches under nose and waft aroma upwards. Apply to pulse points. Any thoughts on this brand?

I do not know the brand you mentioned in your note above. Essential oils that are 100% pure have no additives whatsoever! I would say those additives are not okay if you thought you were buying 100% essential oils—the plants essence. There are some wonderful blends, but they too, use 100% essential oils.
Apothecary is an old word that dates back to 2600 BC—back to ancient Babylon. The word is more like today’s pharmacies.
I have not heard of Peabody & Paisley Apothecary and cannot find a website by that name. I would suggest you purchase oils from reputable essential oil companies as listed on this website.

You may need to add “cons” to several of the groups that you have no cons listed for. Many of those failed third party testing. Their oils we’re not pure and were contaminated. You can check it out on the Blue Tansy Analysis Facebook group.

I use essential oils from Ananda Apothecary, Eden’s Garden, and Stillpoint. They give very good information on there essential oils.

Thank You for your article, I have dabbled in 3 “oils” for years (Rose, Almond (because I like the aroma & Melaleuca).
Now I’m looking for the health benefits of oils as I am concerned about medications. Plants have been used for 1000’s of years for medicinal purposes & I think we lost much knowledge & about them because of science’s developing synthetics. I am thankful there are those willing to study what nature already makes for our wellness. (getting back to nature)
The problem I have in going to Companies web pages is: they are all going to tell you their product is “pure” & they wont be lying (even if they use “fillers”, because if they use any portion of the specified plant, they can call it pure). The only time you can be somewhat sure about what is in the bottle is when all ingredients are listed on each label.
I WONDER if the only way to tell that we are getting “pure” for health benefits, is if it is Pharmaceutical Grade?

Oh my gosh! If essential oil companies state that their oils are 100% pure essential oils, then that is true. They do not use fillers. The reputable companies listed on this website put labels on their bottles and do not fake it with the word “pure.”
Pharmaceutical grade? Are you kidding? Pharmaceutical companies could be making medicines to heal, but they cannot make a profit on anything in the plant kingdom. It’s illegal. The only thing they do is try to create chemically what nature created in Her wisdom. Take aloe vera for instance. It is a lovely plant on my windowsill that has a juice in it that relieves irritated eyes and sunburn. However, the big pharmaceutical companies cannot bottle it as a medicine. Of course, some lotions and potions have aloe vera in it, but that’s not the same as a drug. Pharmaceutical companies do not produce essential oils period.
You can read health benefits of essential oils here or go to your browser and type it in. Science cannot develop synthetic “plants.” Plants are themselves and cannot be reproduced with chemicals. Chemicals can imitate fragrances and flavors, but that is not the same as the essence of the plant grown in nature. A rose is a rose. Nothing fake comes close to a Rose (especially the David Austin ones with a fragrance from heaven).
I wish you luck in your search for the truth. Pure essential oils are not a “portion” of the plant, but rather the entire plant, bark, berries, leaves, rind from citrus, or roots. The essence is distilled with tedious processes then bottled. You can read about that on this website too.

Hi, just a note on what I love. I tried to browse through all your questions and comments and at the very end I see someone finally listed Stillpoint as a supplier. I went to the Herbal Academy and found several excellent companies. My favorites are Florihana (in France) and Stillpoint. Download any one of following from each and every oil: Organic Certified, Aromatogram, Chromatography, MSDS, IFRA Certification, Properties, and Technical Data Sheet (TDS). Stillpoint is in Sedona, Arizona, and are run by very credible people. Florihana is in France but don’t let that scare you because you receive your order within a week. After reading, researching and comparing, personally dōTERRA® and Young Living® essential oils are so overpriced and hyped. Check um out!

You need to do more research on doTERRA. Has third party testing and is CPTG. Can also purchase retail without membership. Also Rated number one Essential Oil company in the world. Oils are resourced where native in natural habitat and no pesticides or fertilizers.

Melissa, Thank you so much for your research! I do wonder if you know anything about the oils from Theperfumery.com. I have a friend who purchases from there. She is about to do some aggressive therapy for cancer and I am unsure about those oils compared to other companies. I do not see that they offer any organic oils. I would appreciate any input you have.

Yes, and I have 🙂 I use doterra mainly, and buy Aura Cacia every now and again. I would totally recommend using EO, probably any brand, and make your own wonderful candles! The aromatherapy benefits from using EO in candles is wonderful!!!

Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) and you need to check with your doctor. Do not ingest any essential oils! You would be better off using probiotics shown here. You might need to see a gastroenterologist for knowing the full extent of her condition if it’s that serious. A gut condition is due to the amount of good bacteria in the intestines. Do not give your daughter frankincense to take internally.

I think you’re article on EO’s is great and appreciated. I’ve been using and studying essential oils for years so I’m very familiar with the use and benefits.
You did make a comment that concerns me. You said in an above post, “Young Living® Essential Oils are fantastic from a very reputable company and people love this brand.” I’m a bit confused about this statement. I’ve used a few YL oils and were great. However, I could not understand why the prices were so high. Yes, I know all the reasons YL give for this but I still was not sold on their claims. So I did a little digging. Did you know that Dr. Gary Young’s claims he is a ND-naturopathic doctor on his website and states he earned his degree is from Bernadean University? So I researched Bernadean University and it no longer exists because it was shut down as it was a diploma mill!
Regardless how great people claim his oils are, I’m not sure I’m comfortable giving a con artist any more money for his overpriced oils. There are also disturbing newspaper articles (not random rumors-google it, the references are there if you look) about the death of his healthy newborn delivered in a whirl pool & fined for practicing medicine without a license. It sounds like this guy thinks and act like a doctor but his credentials are fake!!!
I know people like to look the other way about these things when they really like a product but I like buying products with integrity.

*For all you die hard YL fans please don’t get defensive. It’s difficult to trust a brand that has a leader lying about his education. People need to be informed! And if you have proof that his credentials are valid (not sure how that’s possible when university doesn’t exist) but please do. And please don’t say you don’t care about Gary Young’s past because how effective his oils are. Essential Oils have been made and used way before Gary Young started making them and overcharging for the product. Essential Oils work because of the science behind them, not because of Gary Young!

When people feel they’ve been duped by someone or a company, they usually turn away. You can buy other essential oils as good as Young Living, and I’m sure you will.

I concur! I also feel that any company that prices such natural medicine at out of reach prices should be ashamed! Medicine should be for all. NOT just the wealthy.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Nature’s Fusion brand. It is carried by a local organic food store. Everything seems okay, but I’m really new to oils and do not know how to distinguish good from junk.
Since I do not have local access without ordering, it is basically my only option.
