Best essential oil brands pin

Bottom Line Up Front: If you want to skip the full read, my favorite go-to brand right now is Rocky Mountain Oils available Here.

Essential oils are popular today (and growing in popularity) because they are a natural way to fragrance the air and because of the healing, soothing, or stimulating properties they contain. These properties come naturally from the plants the oils are sourced and derived from.

As people become more conscious of the products they use in their homes, and the chemicals they expose themselves to, essential oils will increasingly be seen as an alternative to some of these synthetic products.

A Note About Essential Oil Standards and Guidelines

A lot of good essential oils brands will test their oils in house, or have their oils tested by a verified third party for purity and quality standards.

As of yet, today there are no regulatory guidelines on essential oils for brands to adhere to and no set definition for claims like “Therapeutic Grade” or “Clinical Grade”.

It’s been known for some companies to add fillers, synthetics and unnatural constituents to their oils, which dilutes the the purity.

Many of the best brands reviewed below have created their own testing formulas and operate with transparency about their test results. In an industry with few regulations, it’s nice to see these essential oil brands putting rigorous testing practices in place, simply because the discerning consumer has come to demand it.

Choosing an Essential Oil Brand for Therapeutic Use

Essential oils are often associated and even marketed for therapeutic use. Technically, this is misleading, as no governmental agency officially recognizes and approves essential oils for therapeutic use.

Despite the lack of recognition, essential oils are still considered beneficial for multiple aspects of life. Be wary of companies selling their essential oils with a label saying they are intended for therapeutic use. This is because that may just be a marketing scheme.

The most important factor to ensure that your oils are okay for therapeutic use is purity. For the most part, your best bet is to choose a brand whose oil purity has been tested and verified. Make sure that your essential oil is real and not mixed with toxins used as fillers, as this can be harmful to your body.

Choosing the Best Quality Essential Oil Brands

  • Essential Oil Purity

While there are no industry rules to regulate essential oil testing or the purity of essential oil products sold, there are measures that many brands are taking to help consumers understand the product they are buying.

The most common testing practice is GC and MS. GC stands for Gas Chromatography, and MS stands for Mass Spectrometry. GC is a method of separating the volatile compounds in essential oils into individual components, and Mass Spectrum measures the masses within a sample. MS testing can applied to pure samples as well as complex mixtures.

Each of these tests, although difficult to read the analysis report if you’re not a chemist, gives the purity levels of an essential oil, and is able to identify any ‘unnatural’ properties.
Good brands will take advantage of these testing methods to reject defects, and only release the purest oils for consumers.

In the US, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for regulating foods, food additives, cosmetics, drugs, and vitamin dietary supplements. Some brands that sell essential oils must follow some regulatory guidelines set by the FDA (Like NOW Foods, which has an essential oils line), but depending on the use of the product, FDA guidelines may not apply to essential oils.

  • Non-GMO Essential Oils

When brands speak about using non-GMO plants – they’re referring to non Genetically Modified Organisms. Non-GMO plants are preferable when producing essential oils because genetically modified plants may have enhanced or altered levels of certain compounds vs. the 100% natural plants.

  • Essential Oil Prices

The prices of essential oils vary – look at the price guide for each of the brand reviews above – and you’ll see how they can differ. Obviously, every brand thinks of profit margins, and making a profit is how they stay in business.

Top recognizable brands such as Young Living and doTERRA cost the most, but there are some great mid size brands that offer just as quality oils for a lot less. (For example: Rocky Mountain is a medium sized brand that is price conscious, and its quality is incredibly good.)

When considering quality and price, the top brands may go a lot farther where you only need to use a few drop, compared to needing to use more oil from a lesser quality brand to achieve the same effect.

For those of you who are just starting out… experiment.

First of all, find a brand that fits your budget. Then begin experimenting with a variety of essential oils to benefit from their healing properties. Once your nose becomes accustomed to the powerful aroma of essential oils, you can move forward and look for another brand that offers a higher potency, and a longer shelf life. Or you may discover the first brand you choose, is the best one for you. Not everyone likes the same potency, and if you don’t want a scent that packs a punch, then why pay a high price tag?

As with anything, start out small and you won’t go wrong.

Pure essential oils can be purchased in bulk at wholesale prices, or at retail prices.

  • Overall Oil Quality

There are a few factors in determining the quality of an oil. Yes, it has the stamp 100% pure – but how pure is pure these days? When researching brands, it’s good to look for where their suppliers, growers, and extractors or distillers are based.

For the best crops to grow they need to be in the right climate. They need to be growing in nutrient rich soil and need to be harvested at the right time of year.

Extraction is one of the key elements to the essential oil process. For example, in a steam distillation extraction, if the steam is too hot it may ruin the extracted produce. A brand who knows this, and cares about it, will be a brand who supplies quality essential oils.

Another way to look for quality is through a brand’s testing practices. Although there are not currently any regulatory standards in regards to the purity of essential oils, it is always a winner when a brand says it tests it’s essential oils for purity measures, such as GC and MS testing. Independent third-party testing is even better.

GC and MS testing seem to be becoming a ‘voluntary’ industry standard with so many brands going down this testing route. And, it’s something that consumers can keep an eye out for when considering the quality of an essential oil brand.

  • Service and Support

Customer service matters, along with a quality product of course. When we make a purchase, if that purchase is easy, we notice. If the purchase is difficult, we notice. Making the purchasing process easy is something that good brands consider, especially when purchasing online.

When we’re a returning customer, we want to be treated differently, with more loyalty than a new one. So, look out for reward programs, discounts for repeat purchases and member sign-ups. Some brands offer lots of tips and tricks to help customers get the best from their essential oils.

If you want to return a product, you want the brand to willingly accept it (especially if you are not satisfied). Brands with a 100% money back guarantee are always a good place to begin. Just make sure you check the Terms and Conditions to determine if  ‘any product, for any reason’ is returnable.

  • Reputation and Reviews

Most brands have ‘our story’ on their website. This gives the opportunity for the customer to really get to know who they are buying from. So, get to know your brands by what they have to say, and don’t be afraid to do some research to find out what their customers think about them. There are plenty of review sites available where you can learn about customer experiences – so go and check them out before making a purchase.

Just remember that no matter how hard one tries, one cannot and will not please everyone. So, as a rule of thumb, use the 80:20 rule. If 80% of people are happy, then give it go.

The Right Essential Oil Quality For Your Needs

To select the right brand of essential oil for what you are trying to do, you must first know the reason you are buying an essential oil and what you want to accomplish. You want to know the grade of the oil and trust the supplier you plan to buy from. We have put this guide together to help you make a wise decision for your purchase.

For a pure grade oil, avoid words like “fragrant oil,” “perfumed oil,” or “identical oil.” These words send up a red flag that the products are not pure (unadulterated, clean, genuine, or natural).

Be extremely cautious with those suppliers promoting “essential oils” with therapeutic or aromatherapy grades. There is no government regulating body (such as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to tell you what you are getting with their labels since they are not involved. Not all companies are deceptive with their words. You will need to assess the sellers’ statements based on these questions you should ask yourself.

Why Will You Use an Essential Oil?

If you are only going to be using essential oils to make candles or soap, or to make your home smell better, then you can be perfectly fine buying fragrance-grade oils. You will not need therapeutic grades of oil for room fresheners, shampoo, and detergents.

Deciding your purpose, the next step is to determine what oil is applicable for that purpose. The 100% pure therapeutic oils can be expensive due to the extracting methods from the plants. They are not needed for home craft applications, but are probably what you want for diffused healing use. For some specific oils, purity is more important as well. For jojoba oils for instance, selecting only the purest oils is important.

For a full list and chart of essential oil uses and benefits and what they’re used for, check out here.

What Grade of Essential Oil Do You Need?

If you plan to use the essential oil for your kids, the family, or your four-legged furry friend, it is better to purchase the 100% therapeutic oil. For alternative health uses, or use in a spa or salon, use 100% essential therapeutic oils. Therapeutic oils are distilled under more strict guidelines without solvents. Procuring from a reputable essential oil supplier will cost more, but it’s worth it in the end. You get what you pay for.

Essential Oil Grades and What They Mean

Grade of Essential Oils

  • Grade A—is a pure unadulterated oil that employs a rigorous distillation process
  • Grade B—the natural food grade essential oil that is organic and certified with a small amount of trace chemicals
  • Grade C—the perfume grade that is highly concentrated, and unaltered, but contains some chemicals and solvents
  • Floral Water—These are water soluble fragrances also called Flower Water and are low quality essential oils synthetically made (not from nature) and are used for skin products

Avoiding Sub-Standard and Synthetic Oils

You may not realize, but a lot of essential oils are synthetic. This is because they are extremely convincing and can be passed off as expensive and genuine very easily.

Synthetic oils, as well as cheaper, sub-standard oils, may contain toxins. This means your essential oil, if synthetic or substandard, may be harmful to your skin and may not provide the aromatherapy benefits generally sought after for essential oils.

While it can be very hard to distinguish between a real essential oil and a sub-standard or synthetic one, there are signs that you need to look out for.

Type of Container/Name

Real oils will generally be sold in small containers, likely four oz. or smaller, with a dark colored tint to the container and an eye dropper. A real essential oil will also commonly include the Latin name of the desired plant on the container.

Generally, containers for real essential oils will include a label saying it is 100% pure oil, mentioning how it is wild-crafted and/or a USDA seal. Once you get a chance to open the container, if the cap is screwed on, it should be sealed with something called “orifice reducer.”

In addition to that, cheap plastic or rubber will not be used on real oils, as it can break down and affect the oil.

As a general rule of thumb, it will be very rare to find real essential oils at a very low price. In other words, be wary of how much you are spending to make sure that you truly are getting a real product.

Sometimes, your natural intuition will be able to pick up on whether an oil is fake. However, there are very convincing fake ones as well.
A factor that may tip off synthetic oils, if you cannot tell naturally, is this: if you have bought the oil multiple times, synthetic oil will always smell the same. Odds are, a real oil will never smell exactly the same, but these are very subtle differences.

Purity Test

Trickle a drop of the oil onto a white sheet of paper and let it dry. If an oil ring is left, it is likely not a real oil.

Essential Oil Storage Tips

If like me you began your essential oil journey with a row of oils on your bedside table, you may want to consider a more suitable storage option. To get the maximum benefits out of the oils, it is necessary to store them properly. Here are the basics in storing essential oils the right way:

  • Keep them in a darkened space. The color of the amber or blue glass bottles blocks out the sun which prevents deterioration of the product.
  • Citrus oils are prone to oxidation. To avoid damage caused by temperature fluctuations, it is best to store citrus products in the refrigerator.
  • The carrying cases and aromatherapy boxes are specially designed for essential oils, and wooden boxes are best for keeping the oils at their best

For example, the Welledia AromaStorage Essential Oil Wooden Box pictured above is natural wood intricately designed to hold more than 24 bottles. This box is custom made of thick quality pine wood and can hold 24×5 – 30 mL bottles or it can hold 12×5 – 30 mL bottles. It also has low dividers providing easy access to the smaller bottles. There are pads to hold the smaller bottles in place. The metal clasp and handle makes it easier to carry from one place to another.

Essential Oil Diffusers

Diffusing essential oils is a great way of circulating the scent around a whole room. With a diffuser you can widen the reach of essential oil healing properties and feelings of well-being. Diffusers come in many shapes and sizes these days and are incredibly easy to use.

When using an aromatherapy diffuser, the oil is released in a fine mist into the air enabling the healing properties from the essential oil to affect everyone in that room. Diffusers are useful for those with short or long-term ailments, as well as simply creating a relaxing and calming environment with soothing scents that promote wellness and wellbeing.

Some popular features include auto shut-off timers, color-changing led lights, cool mist functionality, and intermittent use timers. Make sure your aromatherapy diffuser is made of BPA-free plastic and be cautious when placing in children’s rooms (selecting the diffuser is key here).

Types of Diffusers for Essential Oils:

  • Nebulizing Diffusers
  • Ultrasonic or Humidifying Diffusers
  • Evaporative Diffusers
  • Heat Diffusers

A Note on Carrier Oils

When you choose an oil for cooking, you evaluate which one would be best based on factors like its smoke point and flavor. The same idea applies when choosing a carrier oil to create your own beard oil for fathers day or applying the oil to your skin. A carrier oil helps disperse the essential oil into your skin evenly, reducing the impact of a direct application. Using a carrier oil is especially important for hot oils, like pepperment essential oil and rare oils, like frankincence essential oil.

Some of the commonly used carrier oils include:

    • Coconut oil – coconut oil is renowned for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. It also deeply moisturizes dry skin. Use this with an essential oil for application as a carrier oil, or whip it with jojoba oil, lemon essential oil, lavender essential oil or eucalyptus for a nice body butter.
    • Olive oil – olive oil is commonly found in kitchens despite its undesirable smoke point. It does, however, make a great carrier oil. Alternatively, mix with peppermint oil or frankincense for a masculine, moisturizing beard oil. Olive oil benefits both dry skin and hair.
    • Avocado oil – avocado oil is used to create a lot of beauty products benefitting dry skin and hair. Mix with lemon essential oil and lavender essential oil for best benefits.

The essential oil industry is changing. Consumers are demanding quality and pure essential oil, and most brands are providing just that.

Hopefully, the reviews of each brand will help you on your way to understanding what essential oil companies offerings may suit your budget. If price is your goal, be sure to check out the small price guide on each brand review and avoid multi-level marketing essential oilcompanies. This will give you an indication of the difference in price between brands.

If social and global community awareness is a top priority then take a look at where these brands select their growers and how their sales support the communities they buy from. But if it’s just down to wanting 100% pure essential oil, then make sure the brand you choose is putting some checks in place to assure their essential oil products are free from synthetics, fillers and other toxins.

Regardless of what factor is at the top of your list, you’ll find everything you need on this review page. The next step – head over to your new favorite brand website and check them out. Read the reviews, and then make a selection. Remember to invest in a quality essential oil diffuser and educate yourself on carrier oils. Happy essential oil shopping!

As a youngster, I have vivid memories of walking through the large fantastic garden my dad kept for his entire life. 2. Fiona Jak

I’m very grateful for this research whether it’s alphabetical or not…thank you so much for putting in the time for your research, something folks, we don’t have to do now, and if you are unsure do your own research, for heavens sake!!!.essential oils are a confusing thing because of over inflated prices, lack of integrity and dishonesty, so I’m still having trouble deciding who to buy from. any feedback and recommendations would be very much appreciated I’m a holistic therapist and will be using them a lot…and I nearly jumped on the sheep bandwagon and bought young living, not so sure now.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Fiona Jak,

Thanks for appreciating what we do. Yes, essential oils can be confusing and we wanted to take the “mystery” out of the process and products. Much success to you in your holistic therapy work. Young Living® Essential Oils are fantastic from a very reputable company and people love this brand.

      Best regards,

  3. Lynette

    Good evening.
Is anyone familiar in using essential oils in aromatherapy candle making? I’ve been researching and many reviews state the smell does not stay long when using essential oils as opposed to fragrance oils in candle making. Any favorite essential oils out there or recommendations? Thank you.

  4. Robin Gillett

I’ve become interested in getting certified as an aromatherapist. There is a school here in Florida that I’m interested in. They will supply all your oils in a kit form which comes from a company named Aromatics. Do you have any info on them? The school itself is listed on the NAHA site, so I feel confident about that. Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your hard work putting this list together! What a blessing g for novices like me!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Robin,

We do not address aromatherapist schools, so do not have information. Sounds like you have found a good place. Maybe others will respond to your inquiry.

      Best regards,

  5. Judi

I so appreciate your article and wish it had been written a year ago before I invested in doTERRA. I love their oils but the prices are astronomical. Unless you are on their monthly plan (LRP), you are taxed on the retail price instead of the wholesale price (10%+). The shipping is over the top as well. I ordered one oil at $10.50 but when they added the shipping and tax, this $10.50 oil went up to almost $20.00. I will re-read this well thought out article and maybe try some of the brands you’ve listed here just to compare the quality and prices. Thank you so much for all your time and effort.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Judi,
Thanks for your note on December 30. Yes, some of the companies are pricey. You need to go to the websites of the brands you like and read in detail.

  6. Nicki

Hello, i found this to be wonderful! i do have one question though and i don’t know if it was covered under the reviews or some where else on the page. How do you know which oils or blends of oils are able to be ingested? thank you

    1. Melissa

      Hi Nicki,
Thanks for writing on December 31 about ingesting essential oils and blends. Most are not to be ingested. I always wonder why people want to ingest them. Most oils have chemical properties that should never be taken internally or on the skin. Eat well and take vitamins if you think your body is lacking in something. Not being an aromatherapist or a chemist, I have very little knowledge about this subject. You might want to research online. Most are more powerful than pharmaceuticals. Read the warnings at this site:

      Best regards,

  7. Traci Yoshitomi

I find the wellness company that i am with has the best oils with better prices…

    1. Melissa

      Hi Traci,

Thanks for your note. We do not sell essential oils—we evaluate them. Do stay with a wellness company that has the best deals for you.

  8. Sarah

I just wanted to add this reference for essential oil newbies such as myself.

I found the article to be very informative on the background information for all the marketing lingo I found myself getting lost behind when looking into Essential Oils. Granted in my area DoTerra and Young Living run a muck, and only through research, websites such as yours, along with many more – I found that I didnt have to be tied down to the MLM tactics or memberships. Through this review and commentary alone you (and everyone involved) have opened my eyes to 37 other companies I had no idea about! The ones I have found mentioned have been the following:

    Young Living
    Edens’ Garden
    Rocky Mountain Oils
    Plant Therapy
    NOW Foods
    Mountain Rose Herbs
    Healing Solutions
    Fabulous Frannie
    Kis Oils
    Plant Guru
    Majestic Pure
    Radha Beauty
    Prime Natural
    Nature’s Alchemy
    Butterfly Express
    Ancient Legacy
    Piping Rock
    Bulk Apothecary
    Native American Indian
    EO Exchange
    Organic Infusions
    Be Young
    Swiss Just
    Tibet Mountain
    Spark naturals

I appreciate your hard work in providing this information to the world. It’s definitely helping me research the right company for me. What they have to offer to its customers, how forthcoming they are with their distillation processes, batch reports and so on. Keep up the good work. God Bless.

    1. Melissa

      Hello Sarah,

Your long list is overwhelming as we discuss many of those companies. Thanks for your note an appreciating what we do.

      Best regards,

  9. Susan Cann

Thanks for your time in putting this together! (BTW: I really appreciate your comment about ingestion – same thing goes for topical application and inhalation – essential oils are HEAP powerful medicine and without proper guidance and instruction, can result in more harm than good…)

    1. Melissa

      Hi Susan,

Thanks for appreciating what we do here. Yes, 100% pure essential oils are very powerful, and yes again, without knowledge, they can be harmful.

      Best Regards,

  10. Beth Zander

Curious about your thoughts about Butterfly Express out of Idaho. Have you ever reviewed them?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Beth,

We have not reviewed Butterfly Express, LLC essential oils. They do receive 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon and that is a positive stamen from buyers. Yes, they are located in southeastern Clifton, Idaho, providing over 80 synergistic blends and over 100 single oils. I think this is a viable source for great oils.

Thanks for writing about this company.

  11. Pam

Well, I’m thinking this was a helpful start to my research into essential oils companies. Thanks so very much for taking the time and effort that went into it and then sharing. People need to take it for what it is. If it is not enough information or not “whatever”, then they need to get off their behinds and do it themselves. Thanks again.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Pam,

Thanks for acknowledging our efforts. Yes, people can do their own research to know exactly what they want and need, why they choose what product, price, and more reasons. We evaluate, but not in as much detail as the manufacturer states at their websites with information and data.

      Best regards,

  12. Randi Young

Thank you so much for puting this together! I know this takes MANY hours to do. I too am new at using essential oils & am very frustrated trying to find thee best oils, that won’t cost me a ton. I started with using “Eden Gardens.” So far I’m happy, but have been told that it’s on the lower end of quality. I’m just going to keep doing my research. I REALLY appreciate you doing this for everyone!!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Randi,

Yes, it takes much time putting the site together. Thanks for understanding that! If you are happy with Edens Garden™ Essential Oils, that is what matters. The company does not produce “lower-end quality” products. Keep researching and use what makes you feel good. However, don’t go on a costly journey that might cause you more frustration.

      Best regards,

  13. June

Thank You SO Much for your informative compilation on EO companies and distributors. Your information has given me an excellent starting point to research and choose from which companies I will be purchasing my oils. I appreciate all of your time and effort. I will keep you posted as to my findings and experiences.

    Again, Thank You!!!

    1. Melissa

      Hi June,

Thanks for letting us know we are doing a good job helping you get started on your journey with Nature’s wonderful essential. Yes, come back here and tell us about your adventure and experiences.

      Best regards,

  14. autumn

So, can I ask what brand do you use?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Autumn,

I like the Gentle Breezes™ ultrasonic essential oil diffuser and use citrus oils from Healing Solutions mostly. What do you like?

  15. Al

Thanks so much Melissa for this list! It is incredibly helpful to me as I have used/encountered a lot of these brands you review. Have also found most of the comments helpful, as they will sometimes bring more info to the table

I just wanted to list, for the record, that I have run across a brand on ebay, called My Fresh Lab or MFL, that has pretty unbelievably cheap prices. They ship out of Hong Kong. They claim to be “100% Nature Pure Essential Oils 5ml/10ml Therapeutic Grade Aromatherapy Set”

    example here:

now, obviously affordability is attractive to me, and I don’t want to be a price snob. On the other hand I am having a lot of trouble believing that 10ml of pure jasmine 100% natural therapeutic oil only costs $5!

I will probably hold off on buying from them till I find out more. If anyone at all (Melissa or a commenter) knows ANYTHING about these guys, it would be super appreciated

    1. Melissa

      Hi Al,

The My Fresh Lab (MFL) oils you mention shown on eBay are not sold by Amazon. At 99 cents (72 cents USD) for a bottle of lavender would make one skeptical of its purity. We tend to evaluate USA produced oils that are well branded with good reputations by users.

  16. Leslie

I’d love to see you add Nature’s Sunshine’s essential oils to this article. They were part of Forbes most trusted companies. I believe their quality is excellent. Their oils are all either wild crafted or organic.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Leslie,

Nature’s Sunshine official website does not open–getting server 404 errors. I wanted to check their history and production methods. This company does cell a few oils on Amazon along with a ton of vitamins. We will consider listing it here if we are able to locate the company.

  17. Mary Anne

I would like to know about a company called Jade Bloom. So far I like their oils and they are reasonably priced compared to DoTerra and Young Living. Has anyone else used these oils?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Mary Anne,

W8 Distributing, Inc. doing business as Jade Bloom is in Herriman, Utah, selling therapeutic and pharmaceutical grade oils. They source and manufacturer distilled oils. It is not an MLM company and the price is competitive. They do product testing and are sold on Amazon. If you like them, then you should continue to purchase the product.

  18. Andrea

Thank you Melissa for helping out with your information. It is sad that some people always have to take it to another level. If they don’t like what you write, they need to go to another resource. I found it very informative and thank you again.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Andrea,

I agree. Some people are not always in a positive spirit mode. Thanks for thanking us. It is a lot of work writing and maintaining the site. We appreciate you letting us know you find the information helpful.

  19. Peggy Schaffer

Thank you for all the research you’ve done and shared. After reading many other articles and yours it has only confirmed to me that my choice to use Young Living oils was a good one. There are many good quality oils on the market, for me it just came down to which one pulled at me more than the rest. Seed to seal, longevity, and just plain ole moms giving their opinion is what swayed me. Happy oily living to all. 🙂

    1. Melissa

      Hi Peggy,

Thanks for your upbeat and positive note! Young Living™ Essential Oils are excellent oils and many people love them. But like anything else, some like chocolate, some like vanilla, and some like strawberry ice cream! It’s important also to have a platform where people can share their experiences, and as you say, “Plain ole moms giving their opinion.” Write often and share your adventures with oils!

  20. Lynn

Love all the wonderful research you’ve done and use several of the oils listed. Just wondering if you’ve ever heard of Essential7? Would love to see a review on them. Thanks again for all your hard work and your extensive research.

    1. Melissa

Hi Lynn, seems to sell directly. They are based in Golden, Colorado, a favorite place of mine, yet I do not know them. I do not see that they sell through Amazon or others.

      Best regards,

  21. Tracy

Thanks for putting this together. I would suggest another look at ArtNaturals, and DEFINITELY Majestic Pure. I’ve ordered oil from both recently, and both were returned, because I seriously doubt they’re anything they claim. Both had a strong chemical smell, yet smelled little like what they were supposed to. It’s a shame because their pricing is really accessible for the masses!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Tracy,

As you can read in our reviews for Art Naturals and Majestic Pure™, we did our best to give accurate pros and cons from users. There is no way we will know what the companies claim to be for every oil brand on the market because we do not purchase many. We provide information and the consumer can use that information to purchase or not to purchase brands. I’m sorry this happened to you and that you were disappointed with these two companies having to return the oils. Yes, the prices are good.

      Best regards,

  22. Jennifer Johnson

Hi, Thank you for sharing the information. I agree that Young Living oils are very expensive so I am searching for affordable and pure essential oils. I wonder if you are familiar with two companies: Bulk Apothecary and Organic Infusions.

I would love to hear your opinions about those two companies since their prices look too affordable to buy but I am not familiar with their businesses. I have few bottles from Rocky Mountains, NOWS, and Aura Cacia. They are okay but not best like Young Living. So I wonder if you know about two companies and I would love to hear from your opinions about them.

    1. Melissa

Hi Jennifer, started in 2010 with oils, soaps, and candle making supplies. They have a small store in Streetsboro, Ohio, and sell directly from their site. They are not associated with Amazon and we are Amazon affiliates. and the CEO is an aromatherapist and a certified massage therapist. About the oils–I do not know and it appears they sell direct as well.

Sorry we cannot help you with these two essential oil brands.

      Best regards,

  23. harish pechetti

of all these brands described which is the best one

    1. Melissa

      Hi Harish,

That’s impossible for us to say. It’s a very personal choice. Young Living™ is an essential oil company founded in 1993. They are the most expensive and have many people loving this brand. You can read about them here.

However, dōTERRA® essential oils founded in 2008, is highly recommended by users, including Rocky Mountain Oils and many others are great as well. Read about the best essential oils here.

      Best regards,

  24. Angelia Gopalakrishnan

I am just getting started with essential oils, Can someone tell me the best oils to use to stop headaches and migraine’s ?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Angelia,

I do hope someone will share their experience for migraines and headaches here for you. You might want to read about oils for headaches here.

      Best regards,

  25. Anna

Thank you for putting in the time and effort for this amazing compilation of information! Your hard work has made my day so much easier! I’m sorry for the attacks by certain naysayers (who shall not be named, but are clearly biased themselves- or simply trolls!)

    1. Melissa

      Hi Anna,

Thanks for your positive input! We appreciate that. Don’t trolls live under bridges in the dark? LOL We must see the light within to pass on the love so needed in the world today. My best to you and your day.

      Best regards,

  26. Karen

I’m new to essential oils as well and I really liked what I have read so far!! To learn more, what are your recommendations on books?

  27. Lisa

Any information about SwissJust Essential Oils? I’m very curious about this one..

  28. Shannon

I started buying my essential oils from Edens Garden and I absolutely love them! I switched from YL and I’m so much happier now! I was shocked to read in your cons section of Edens Garden that they have more fragrance oils than essential oils. That is the furthest thing from the truth! They do not sell one single fragrance oil! I was so shocked by this I called Edens Garden right away and they confirmed that they do not sell any fragrance oils. Could you please correct this. I don’t want people being misinformed about them. That little statement is a HUGE deal. If I didn’t know any better and I read that I would never have given them a chance! Please be sure to know all of your facts before writing reviews and recommendations. Thank you

  29. Shannon

I’m just curious as to why my comment about your false information on Edens Garden has been removed? I think it’s important that people receive accurate information when giving recommendations. Edens Garden does not sell any fragrance oils. They sell only top quality, undiluted, unaltered essential oils with no filler or base oils added. The only con you had for the company was inaccurate as I called them to double check. Please post accurate info to be fair to people looking for a great brand and the Co.

    1. Melissa

Your comments have not been removed. There are two of them here. The information about “fragrance oils” was from a trusted source. It has been removed. It’s best to think that people error, not that they deliberately are trying to be unfair. We do our very best to be accurate, but there are times we do not always get it right. Apologies to you Miss Shannon and so happy you love Edens Garden™ Essential Oils–and they are indeed fragrant!

      Best regards,

  30. Melissa

Greetings, Melissa! (Yes, my name really is Melissa too 😉 Thank you for efforts and diligence in compiling the information here (and responding to comments). I have found this article to be a helpful reference. I do have a quick request: the “Con” statement for NOW Essential Oils seems to have been cut off by mistake and I’m very curious to learn how that sentence ends! Would you please let me know, when you get the chance? Thanks again!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your note. The sentence should read for the number 8. Now Foods (NOW®) above: “Although their prices are low, they have few complaints about their essential oil fragrances being of poor quality.” Sometimes words are accidently cut off and things are missed doing the final edits.

      Best regards,

      1. Melissa

        Thank you!

        1. Melissa

          Hi Melissa,
Thanks for stopping by again! You are welcome and thanks for pointing out the “error of my ways!” These things happen occasionally.

          Best regards,

  31. Cindy

Thank you for your time to make this highly informative article! Irregardless of the negative comments, there are so few who take their time to help others nowadays except to exact a price from them. Keep up the awesomeness!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Cindy,
Thanks for your note on Feb 17. Regardless of what people say, we keep going on. Keep reading here and enter the contest Giveaway for a discounted diffuser shown here.
      Take care,

Have you considered researching Hopewell Essential Oils? Their site is fantastic for information, blends and testimonies of satisfied followers. I’ve learned so much from them. RC

    1. Anca

Hopewell are amazing! Top notch quality. I switched from YL to them, never regret it.

      1. Melissa

        Hi Anca,
I will indeed check on Hopewell Essential Oils. Two comments today about that brand. Thanks for your suggestion.

    2. Melissa

      Hi Rhonda,
I’ll take a look at Hopewell Essential Oils. Thanks for the information.
      Best regards,

  33. DAWN

    1. Melissa

      Hi Dawn,

Most of us have heard of Fabulous Frannie® Essential Oils. See our review here.

Best of luck on your essential oil journey!

  34. Susan

I buy essential oils primarily for soapmaking. I’d love to know if you have any comments about Health and Beauty Natural Oils, or Sun Essentials?

    1. Melissa

      Hi Susan,
Nope! Do not know Health and Beauty Natural Oils, or Sun Essentials. You can type those names into your browser and check them out. We do not review soap-making oils. We do, however, discuss 100% pure essential oils for oil diffusers.

Thanks for writing and best to you in your research.

  35. Mark Anthony Hardy

    Hi Melissa,

Do you have any experience or advice on PlantLife brand essential oils? If so, where would it fall on your list compared to Young Living, DoTerra, Rocky Mountain brands?*

I’m currently in the market for finding the “right” brand for me and would love some additional insight if you have any!

    1. Melissa

      Mark Anthony Hardy,

PLANTLIFE™ is listed here on our website at:
Plantlife™ products are the perfect blend of science and nature, using “old world” formulas. This combined with the timeless sciences of herbology and aromatherapy is the company’s mission to create consistently all-natural products that are good for you, using 100% pure essential oils that are steam distilled. Each of their therapeutic blends and aromatherapy creations is produced to improve our lives with the benefits from the plants.

  36. Holly

    Hi Melissa;
Thank you for taking the time to research and share the information you found. This information will be a great starting point for my daughter and I to expand on. I’m sorry that unfortunately we live among so many negative Nellies. If they have the time to criticize your work and opinion then they should have the time to do all that you have done and instead of criticizing your hard work they would help expand this knowledge and information. Again we appreciate all your hard work and time researching and sharing your findings. I was amazed to learn by your research just how many EO companies there are. Keep up the great work and please keep sharing!!! Thank you.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Holly,

      Thanks for your nice comments.

  37. kris k

You state that YL is the most expensive, I disagree as if you take into effect that you need much LESS of the product to do a better job it really is not more expensive at all. You may need one drop of YL oils and need 10 drops of another company and I will tell you the one drop of YL will still do a better job. Plus YL also has guarantee if you don’t like products and one year warrenty on their diffusers too(did not see that mentioned). YL is also used in many of hospitals over other companies and YL is only company who is allowed to harvest certain frankincense oils because the tribe that owns the land only works with YL because of their ethics in all and how they take care of the land. YL also will not use oils if they don’t pass inspection, if it is out of stock it is because it was not good enough to be called YL product many times.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Kris K,

Price and value are all relative in the real world. Warranty wasn’t mentioned because it was maybe unavailable. Why don’t you tell me?

    2. Melissa

      Hi Kris K,

Thanks for your comments. I’m sure others will like to know the information you provided.

  38. Nina

Thank you for all your efforts in producing such an informative piece that will assist me in my research and personal journey into and the use of Essential Oils.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Nina,

You are welcome and thanks for visiting here and reading it all.

      Best regards,

  39. Sarah

I use Plant Therapy and Edens Garden a lot.. I have used DT and YL and they are just as good and a fraction of the price. Some of the mlm blends are not pure oils if you look at the bottles they contain a carrier oil with them.. you are paying big bucks for a diluted bottle of oil. Also Plant Therapy and Edens Garden both have the GC/MS reports for each oil, the others do not. They are also tested by an independent lab not one that they own. I also do not care for DT and YL’s unsafe practices of ingesting oils, using oils neat, and unsafe usage on children.. they tell you all of these are safe because that gets you to use more oils, and most people fall for it.. you use more you buy more.. they make more… well they aren’t getting my money and i hate to burst their bubble but a lot of people are starting to use oils like Plant Therapy and Edens Garden after switching from DT and YL and they are finding out that they have been lied to and their are other options that are just as good if not better…

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sarah,

Yes, there are strange things in marketing these days. It’s all very personal and the choices we make have to satisfy no one but ourselves.

      Take care,

  40. Shalimar Crowe

Has anyone ever heard of “It Works?”. Apparently they include multiple ” health” products. I have 3 friends selling 3 different EOs (It Works, YL, and DT). I’ve only been to a YL info meeting and in all honesty thought about buying their membership pkg just to get me started without having to buy everything individually. I’m the type that dwells over research and can never get a definitive answer. I’m not sure I’m crazy about MLM, bc we have been ” suckered” before, but my friends seem happy. I’ll look on “It Works” website ,but didn’t know if anyone else has heard of them or done research. Thanks for your information!!

    1. Melissa

      Hi Shalimar,

I’ve never heard of “it Works.” Maybe someone reading has and will comment for you. Personally, MLMs are like pyramid schemes to me. I could be wrong. Keep researching and hopefully you’ll find an answer.

      Good luck at it!

    2. Shelly Harter

I hate pyramid schemes! I don’t know about the rest of the MLM’s, but DoTerra isn’t a pyramid; I only say that, for the fact the “buy-in” is ONLY $35.00 & there is NO Monthly “quota” you have to sell in order to get wholesale prices 🙂 They are pricey, but when purchasing wholesale, that helps a lot & I like the research they continue to do in the field of eo’s.

  41. Ashley

Has anyone used or know anything about barefut oils?

    1. Melissa

Barfut is here and I do not know of them. Maybe others know of it and will comment here for you. The product is sold on Amazon so you can check it out here.
      Best regards,

  42. Marie

You have done a monumental amount of work for us all, whether or not some folks are able to admit to it and further, thank you for it in appreciation. Thank you. I signed on with doTerra last year after getting an intro gift set for Christmas. Alas, I didn’t do my homework at the time. Now, your article is helping me see what is available and of high quality. I do like doTerra oils, but it isn’t my belief that they are so superior to several other companies, smaller and more customer friendly companies. I hope to narrow in on one I like and trust soon. Meanwhile, know that your work here helped me a LOT. Again, many thanks. I do have an idea how much time this took.

    1. Melissa

Yes indeed, a lot of work goes into this website. It took a year for the diffusers and essential oils and as much time for the other products not related. Many people like to complain and gripe—but it is no walk in the park! I’m happy you wrote and expressed your appreciation. That means a lot. Another thing, essential oils are very personal. Aroma varies from one diffuser to another. Have you noticed that?

      Best regards,

  43. Chris

What information do you have about Aethereo Essential oils from Plant Extracts International?

    1. Melissa

We have no information for Plant Extracts International or their Aethereo Essential Oils. You can check their website and Amazon does show a few oils but with no reviews for selling history.

Sorry I cannot help you more.

  44. Sonya

Just wanted to say thank you so much for doing all of this research and posting the information. I am new to EO and it is so overwhelming with all the information available. Knowing what companies you can trust etc…The information you have compiled is a great starting place for me to go out and do my own research. Thank you again. It is very much appreciated.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sonya,

Yes, EOs are overwhelming. Good luck in your search. Thanks for you nice comments, too.

  45. Kendra

What about the company Miracle essential oils??
Just saw it on my Facebook feed.

  46. Anni

I have used Wyndmere essential oils along with Aura Casia , I like both companies depending on the oil. I have not had good results with YL . I don’t see any info on Wyndmere would be interested in what people think.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Anni,

See their website here and try the oils to see how you like them. Maybe others will comment here with their experiences using this brand. Aura Cacia® Essential Oils is used by many and Young Living® is a favorite. Guess that’s why they make chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry for people’s different tastes.

      Best regards,

  47. Sandy

I have some Rocky Mountain and Native American and mostly satisfied. I have stayed away from the MLM because I get tired of being bothered with sales. My most recent purchase was Ovvio that I found on Amazon. They claim to be pure therapeutic oils that they get from non gmo organic farms some of which are Italy and India, since that’s where the plants are originally grown. I have been enjoying the Ovvio blends such as Ease and their version of Thief Plus. They have sales on their website each month, and I got extra off my order on Amazon for ordering 6 items; otherwise they run about the same price as Rocky Mountain/Native American.

    1. Melissa

      Hi Sandy,

I’m glad you found essential oils that are affordable and not MLM that can be bothersome.

      Take care,

  48. Mary

Melissa, first I have to say that I was so happy to see this comparison list of these essential oil companies. I have been wanting to use essential oils, but trying to figure out which company would be a good one to start with has been overwhelming to say the least. I actually gave up until now. So, thank you very, very much for this time-consuming list. It is VERY much appreciated!

The second thing that I have to say is that I’m very sorry for all the people that feel the need to attack you and to leave negative comments regarding your post. My thought is rather then leaving negative comments or attacking you for all the work you’ve done on this, is that they should keep it to themselves. It is always sad to me when people feel the need to be so unkind and hurtful to others. You have done a tremendous job with this list. Thank you!

  49. Melissa

    Hi Mary,

Thanks for your warm and positive comments. It’s nice that you let me know you realize the work involved putting all of this together.

Yes, others live a negative and unfulfilling life, so try to put others down to put themselves up. You understand it very well.

Take care and come back and visit often.

  50. Andrea

Omg, I literally am blind… I missed native American Nutritionals, I see it. :/

    1. Melissa

      Hi Andrea,

I’m glad you found American Nutritionals.
