What’s the best way to store essential oils and not have them sitting on counters, on a bathroom shelf, window sill, or in a cupboard?
Newbies to aromatherapy sometimes don’t realize that oils have a shelf life and that heat and sun exposure can decay and weaken the beneficial therapeutic qualities of their oils.
With that said, there are ways to store your 100% essential oils and it doesn’t have to be very expensive to do.
General Storage Tips
Generally you always want your oils packed and shipped to you in dark amber glass bottles because this color best screens out ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.
Dark blue, and green glass bottles are also safe and used today. Some bottles are made using purple glass. You still want to keep them out of a sunny or warm place.
Oils are temperature sensitive, so don’t give them the chills followed by scalding heat—they will oxidize and this reaction causes the oils to chemically decompose. Never use plastic bottles or jars for essential oils—the components of the oils will eat into the plastic and melt it and they will never be usable again.
You can put your lotions and massage oils in plastic since they don’t have the same strength as essential oils for eating into the plastic. A storage box or case is the ideal for perfect storage.

Always Replace the Cap
Always put the cap back on tightly removing any excess oils from the glass threads at the top with a paper towel. The oils evaporate quickly, so it’s important to tighten up the lid securely. Tight lids additionally keep out the oxygen that deteriorates oils.
Always keep your oils away from curious toddlers, children, and pets. They can be volatile and cause serious injury if ingested.
Store Certain Oils in a Fridge or Cooler
Citrus oils such as orange, mandarin, lemon, grapefruit, and lime are highly susceptible to oxidation. Therefore, it’s best to always keep these oils in the refrigerator in their own small box. Most people keep their refrigerators at about 38 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit, and this is fine for essential oils. When oils are kept in the fridge, they last twice as long.
Carrier oils should also be stored in the refrigerator during the hot days of summer. You will need to remove them about 10-12 hours before using so they can absorb their fatty flecks. When the oils warm up at room temperature, shake the bottle, and use.
Be Safe!
Essential oils that are 100% pure are extremely flammable. They must be kept away from candles, gas cook stoves with the flame of fire, anything that can ignite them such as hot food cookers, even cigarettes, lighters, and matches. Store them safely away from heat in their own dedicated box.
If you have a surplus of essential oils, you will want to store them in a place where they will not touch one another and break. Organization is key to finding things quickly too. Boxes do not have to be expensive but should give your oils benefits from sun and heat exposure.
Essential oils that can solidify at cool or cold temperatures are jojoba, that turns as solid as real butter, avocado, rose Otto, star anise, aniseed, and fennel. Some carrier oils can turn solid just as do vegetable oils. Warm them in your hand or let them sit out somewhere for a few hours. Do not put the bottles under hot water.
Some essential oils can even go to freezing temperatures. Some oils, such as anise and rose attar, will solidify, and crystallize in cool temperatures. If solidified or crystallized oils are kept at room temperature, they will liquefy with no destructive effects to the oil.
Citrus oils are best kept in the fridge. If they appear cloudy when you take them from the fridge, it is just the fats and waxes produced from the cold and as soon as they reach room temperature they go back in solution with no damaging effects.
