What Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils Are and Which Are The Best to Get

Contents

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils is a term used when discussing factors that influence aromatherapy products.

Essential oils are essentially highly concentrated and distilled moistures from various plants. To get the essential oils from the plant source, there are a few different distillation processes and methods producers will use including cold pressed, steam distillation, or solvent extracted.

Because of the different ingredient sources, and extraction methods, the purity of essential oils varies from brand to brand, and often very subtly between different batches of the same brand.

Bottom Line Up Front: If you are looking to get started with the ultimate therapeutic grade starter set, I highly recommend this 32-bottle set from Eden’s Garden available here.

What Does Therapeutic Grade Mean?

Often Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils is a term used to refer to only the highest purity oils produced. It’s necessary to note however that there currently is no central oversight organization, or independent group certifying or testing different essential oils, so for a brand to claim their oils are ‘Therapeutic Grade’, it’s more a statement from the brand itself that they consider their oils to be of the highest quality.

Oils that brands put out as ‘Therapeutic Grade’ or ‘Therapeutic Value’ tend to be carefully distilled from the highest quality plants to maintain their benefits or medical qualities. The purpose of such a high quality, bergaptene free oil is generally for aromatherapy, and might be to relax us, alleviate minor ailments, or to stimulate us with only a few drops.

The purity and quality of an essential oil are, like wine, affected by the geography, growing conditions, and harvest time of the source plant they are produced from. Poor growing methods and poor distillation methods will lessen the plant’s therapeutic worth for essential oils.

Therapeutic vs Food Grade Essential Oils

Therapeutic is a loose term that means the oil is of the highest purity offered by that company or brand. Food grade is a regulated term by the US FDA and means the oil is of edible standard.

It is important to note that many essential oil companies do not offer food grade oils and recommend that you inhale or apply topically. However, multi-level marketing companies like Young Living essential oils and DoTerra essential oils have direct sales consultants who may tell you otherwise.

Err on the side of caution and use your better judgment, knowing that these people don’t necessarily represent the multi-level marketing companies’ mandates. The chemical constituents of plant matter, while natural, are still very potent and can cause distress when ingested.

How to Find Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Recognizing the fact that there is no such certification as Therapeutic Grade for essential oils, there are things you can look for to recognize and only purchase the purest of essential oils. Which, especially if you’re using the oils for a specific purpose is what you want.

  • Shop for oils by brand

Different brands use different internal methods of assessing their oil’s qualities, so going with well-known brands with clear and transparent standards is the way to go. If you need help choosing your go-to essential oils brand, check out our full guide to essential oil brands.

  • Avoid expressly stated synthetic fragrance oils

While ‘therapeutic grade’ or ‘clinical grade’ are generally non-specific terms, ‘synthetic oil’ or ‘synthetic fragrance oil’ are specific terms that mean the oil was produced chemically, with additives and ingredients apart from the pure extract of the plant matter it claims to emulate.

  • Shop for organic essential oils

Especially if you are looking for oils to address a specific need or achieve a specific effect, certified organic oils will ensure the cleanest, most pure essential oils for what you’re looking to address. Whenever possible, look for certified organic oils rather than just a company claim that you are, in fact, buying organic essential oils.

  • Assess the purity of an oil on its individual ingredient level

This one is more specific to blends. You can of course purchase essential oil blends from different brands (see for instance our review of the 10 best essential oil blends from doTerra), which are a combination of different essential oils. To ensure the highest quality and purity of these, it’s very import to buy from a reputable brand or make your own from individual oil ingredients you’ve sourced or purchased for their purity.

Organic Carrier Oils

If you’re using organically grown plant matter to make pure essential oil, it doesn’t really make sense to use carrier oil products of lesser quality. Look for organically grown carrier oils, such as organic coconut oil or organic avocado oil, at your local health store. Some essential oils, like peppermint oil, are hot and require a carrier oil to be applied topically to the skin in a safe manner.

Some essential oil companies, like Young Living, Edens Garden, Nature’s Oil, and DoTerra essential oils, sell carrier oil products as well as essential oils. These not only enhance the aroma of the oils but have their own therapeutic benefits to your skin.

Distillation Process

When looking for therapeutic grade essential oils, take time to learn more about the distillation process used to extract the essence from the plant matter in your oils. Steam distillation is a process that is widely used in essential oil extraction and production and is often touted as the reason behind Young Living therapeutic grade oils.

There are various types of distillations, including steam distillation, cold pressed (common for carrier oils), resin tapping, and absolute oil extraction. Of the various distillations, steam distillation is most common. During the steam distillation process, the plant matter is permeated with steam to extract the oils. This creates a high-quality product.

Test for Purity

If you doubt the purity of your essential oils, you can test it yourself. DoTerra essential oils certified their own testing process, known as CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade). CPTG essential oils are touted as the highest available quality. That being said, this testing method is biased as it is specific to the company trying to sell you the product. As we’ve mentioned, there is no central governing body for these claims.

Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (collectively GC MS), is one method used to determine if there are any additives to the plant material in the essential oil. During GC MS, the oil is vaporized and assessed at a molecular level. Unfortunately, gas chromatography is an expensive process.

Organic Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Organic Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are the best because it means the oils ingredients are organically grown without pesticides and that the oil is of the highest quality.

Conclusion

Pure essential oil is very effective and powerful when used in the right circumstances, and can be used for specific purposes such as healing, relaxing, or stimulating. When shopping for pure essential oil, however, it’s important to recognize that the purity of each brand and oil are not uniformly the same. Some companies use the term Therapeutic Grade to indicate their oils are of a high purity and quality, but it’s up to you the consumer (and us, the independent reviewer) to ultimately assess the quality of different brand’s essential oils.

As a youngster, I have vivid memories of walking through the large fantastic garden my dad kept for his entire life. It was there I learned about all the plants and the varied, important properties they can offer humanity. A cool morning misty walk down the meandering paths was a child’s delight, and something I still do to this day in my own sprawling gardens. While I have stepped back from the day-to-day managing of Wellness Appliances, I intend to continue contributing articles on subjects that matter to me from time to time. My days are largely filled volunteering at the local co-op, tooling in my vegetable and fragrance gardens (which I attempt to keep as a year-round gardens), writing, and being the leader of the pack to my two dogs Jacko and Lea. What brand would you suggest for ingestion? Such as grapefruit or lemon?

  3. T. BACA

I heard that DoTerra and Y.L. source from the same place- Rocky Mountain possibly(?) Do you know if this is true? DoTerra uses many of there oils internally. Can you recommend where to buy (other than multi-level marketing) to get oils that are safe for internal use?

    1. Rhonda Laughlin

Miracle Essential Oils have some synergy blends that have been created to use in all 3 ways, inhaling, skin application or ingesting. They are a great company with fantastic deals and are very affordable. I keep several of these on hand. They have a selling program but you do not have to be a “member” to get excellent deals. They often offer specials where you can get a free roll-on bottle, or a spray bottle, or a lovely necklace for aromatherapy for just paying for the shipping. I have gotten all 3 multiple times.
Eden’s Garden Essential Oils have many you can use in all ways as well. Also affordable. I bought a couple of kits from them and am quite pleased with them.
Calily is another very good brand. All of these are high quality, 100% therapeutic grade, and reliable.

      1. Martha Leary

Edens Garden will tell you not to ingest any of their oils. I contacted them about that and that is what they told me. Unless the company tells you that their oils can be ingested you should not. DoTerra and Young Living are two that I am aware of that have oils that the company says you can ingest. If a company tells you that you can’t ingest their lemon oil or lavendar, etc then I would have to be suspect of how pure those oils are as you can safely ingest many oils.
